Chapter 1 – The Camera Never Lied

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

Even the sirens outside seemed distant now.

Preston's confident expression cracked for the first time as he followed Evelyn's eyes toward the tiny security camera mounted above the ballroom entrance.

"What CCTV?" he demanded.

The hotel manager, pale-faced and trembling, stepped forward.

"Sir... every public area of the Whitmore Hotel is recorded twenty-four hours a day."

Preston laughed nervously.

"So? My phone was found in her pocket."

Evelyn didn't answer.

Instead, she gently lifted Sophie into her arms as paramedics rushed through the doors.

The little girl winced but never stopped crying.

"I didn't steal it, Mommy..."

"I know," Evelyn whispered.

"I always knew."

As paramedics treated the cut on Sophie's head, two Chicago police officers entered behind them.

One officer looked at the blood-covered menu board lying on the floor.

"Who threw this?"

No one spoke.

Preston straightened his tuxedo.

"It was an accident."

Before anyone could respond, the hotel manager cleared his throat.

"Our security office has already isolated the relevant footage."

Every head turned.

Preston suddenly looked less certain.

The guests followed the officers toward a private conference room where security monitors lined an entire wall.

The manager rewound the recording.

"There."

The ballroom appeared exactly as it had been twenty minutes earlier.

Guests laughing.

Servers carrying champagne.

Children dancing.

Then the footage zoomed toward Preston's table.

Everyone watched him glance around.

His right hand slipped into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out his titanium phone.

Not missing at all.

He quietly walked behind Sophie's chair while she was helping another flower girl pick up dropped rose petals.

In one smooth movement...

He opened her denim jacket.

Slipped the phone inside the pocket.

Closed it.

Walked away smiling.

Gasps exploded across the room.

Someone whispered,

"My God..."

Another guest covered her mouth.

Preston's new bride slowly stepped backward.

"You framed... an eight-year-old?"

The recording continued.

Minutes later Preston dramatically announced the missing phone.

He walked directly toward Sophie.

Reached into the exact pocket where he himself had hidden it.

The room erupted.

Every accusation...

Every cruel word...

Every judgment...

Had been based on a lie.

Then came the final recording.

Guests watched Preston rip the heavy oak menu board from its stand.

They saw Evelyn shielding Sophie.

They saw Preston deliberately swing with both hands.

The board struck the little girl across the head.

Blood appeared instantly.

The conference room became deathly quiet.

One police officer turned toward Preston.

"You are under arrest for aggravated battery against a child, filing a false report, and evidence tampering."

May you like

For the first time in his life...

No one rushed to save the Whitmore family's golden son.
