Chapter 2 – The Family Chose Their Side

As officers placed handcuffs around Preston's wrists, Margaret stepped forward.
"You can't arrest my son!"
"He didn't mean it!"
Robert Whitmore immediately joined her.
"This family can settle this privately."
The lead detective looked at them without emotion.
"A child was assaulted in front of two hundred witnesses."
"Nothing about this is private."
Margaret turned toward Evelyn.
"Tell them you forgive your brother."
Evelyn stared at the woman who had once tucked her into bed.
"You watched your granddaughter bleed."
"You never even asked if she was alive."
Margaret's lips trembled.
"But we're family."
Evelyn slowly shook her head.
"No."
"Family protects children."
"What you protected..."
"...was a monster."
Guests who had remained silent throughout the evening finally began speaking.
A bridesmaid admitted she had seen Preston carrying his phone earlier.
A waiter confessed Preston had ordered security not to interfere "unless someone caused trouble."
Another guest revealed Preston had privately joked that Evelyn "would never be believed."
One by one...
The lies collapsed.
Then Preston's bride removed her wedding ring.
She looked directly into her new husband's eyes.
"Our marriage lasted less than three hours."
"I refuse to spend another minute with a man who hurts children."
She handed the ring to the detective.
"Please add my statement."
Margaret burst into tears.
Robert lowered his head.
For decades they had protected Preston from every consequence.
Every school fight.
Every fraud.
Every cruel joke.
Every lie.
Tonight...
Their silence had finally created something even they could no longer control.
Outside the hotel, reporters had already gathered.
News spread before sunrise.
"Chicago Executive Arrested After Wedding Assault."
"Security Footage Exposes Child Framing."
The Whitmore name, once untouchable, became synonymous with betrayal.
Meanwhile, inside the hospital, Sophie received seven stitches.
As the doctor finished, she quietly asked,
"Mommy..."
"Was it my fault?"
Evelyn kissed her forehead.
"No, sweetheart."
