Chapter 3: The Man Outside the Gate

One rainy evening, our receptionist called.

"There's someone outside asking to see you."

I looked through the lobby windows.

My father stood alone beneath an umbrella.

He looked older.

Smaller.

The confidence that once filled every room had disappeared.

I walked outside.

For several moments, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he handed me a worn leather notebook.

"I found these after we lost the company."

I opened it.

Every page contained handwritten notes from my grandmother.

Business ideas.

Encouragement.

Little reminders she had written for me when I was still a teenager.

At the bottom of one page she had written:

"Claire sees possibilities that other people miss. Never let anyone convince her otherwise."

Tears blurred my vision.

My father quietly said,

"She always believed in you."

"I should have listened."

I closed the notebook.

"I appreciate you bringing this back."

He nodded slowly.

"I don't expect anything else."

For the first time in years, our conversation ended without anger.

Sometimes closure isn't reconciliation.

Sometimes it's simply laying the past to rest.
