Chapter 2: What the Camera Saw

The hotel's security manager arrived carrying a black laptop.

"I should warn everyone..."

"The ballroom cameras record continuously."

Preston interrupted.

"Wedding guests have privacy."

The manager shook his head.

"The hotel owns the security system."

"It records every public area."

The room became painfully quiet.

Officer Harris folded his arms.

"Play it."

The screen filled with footage recorded less than an hour earlier.

No sound.

Only crystal-clear video.

Everyone watched.

There was Sophie.

Swinging her feet beneath her chair.

Eating cake.

Laughing with one of the flower girls.

She never approached Preston.

Never touched the head table.

Never even looked toward his phone.

My mother slowly sat down.

Then the footage shifted.

Preston walked behind our table.

He paused beside Sophie's chair.

Looked over both shoulders.

Reached into his tuxedo pocket.

Pulled out his titanium iPhone.

Bent down.

Slipped it directly into the pocket of Sophie's little denim jacket.

Then casually walked away.

The ballroom gasped as one.

Someone whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Another guest covered her mouth.

The footage continued.

Seconds later...

Preston grabbed the microphone.

"My phone has been stolen."

He walked directly toward Sophie.

Reached into the exact pocket where he himself had hidden it.

Pulled it out.

Pretended to be shocked.

Then...

The final recording.

The part no one could deny.

Me standing in front of Sophie.

Preston ripping the heavy oak menu board from its stand.

Raising it with both hands.

Swinging it directly into an eight-year-old child.

No accident.

No stumble.

No self-defense.

An intentional blow.

The video ended.

Nobody breathed.

Officer Harris closed the laptop.

"Mr. Preston Whitmore..."

"You are under arrest for aggravated battery against a minor, filing a false report, and fabricating evidence."

"You have the right to remain silent."

My brother looked toward our parents.

For the first time in his life...

Someone wasn't coming to save him.

My father stepped forward.

"There must be some mistake."

Officer Harris looked directly at him.

"The only mistake..."

"...was believing cameras lie."

Handcuffs clicked around Preston's wrists.

The sound echoed louder than the wedding orchestra ever had.

His bride slowly removed her wedding ring.

They had been married...

For exactly four hours.

She placed the ring on a nearby table.

Without saying a word...

May you like

She walked away.

She never looked back.
