CHAPTER 2: The Camera Never Blinked

The ballroom had fallen into a stunned silence.

For the first time that evening...

My brother looked uncertain.

"What CCTV?" Preston snapped.

I didn't answer.

Instead, I pressed a clean napkin against Sophie's head while holding her close.

The distant sirens grew louder.

Within seconds, hotel security rushed through the ballroom doors, followed by two police officers and paramedics.

One officer immediately knelt beside Sophie.

"What happened here?"

Before I could speak, Preston stepped forward.

"My niece stole my phone," he declared confidently. "When I confronted her, things got out of hand."

My mother nodded.

"Unfortunately, it's true."

Several relatives quickly agreed.

The officers listened quietly before turning to me.

I met their eyes.

"I want every word documented."

Then I pointed toward the small black security camera mounted above the ballroom entrance.

"And I want the hotel to preserve every second of today's footage."

For the first time all night...

Color drained from Preston's face.

The hotel manager hurried over.

"Our cameras record continuously," he said. "Nothing has been deleted."

The officer looked at Preston.

"Sir, until we review the footage, nobody is leaving."

An hour later...

Inside the hotel's security office...

The truth appeared on the screen.

The footage showed Sophie sitting quietly beside me, coloring on a children's activity sheet.

She never once approached the head table.

Then Preston entered the frame.

He looked around to make sure no one was watching.

He casually picked up his own phone.

Walked toward our table.

Bent beside Sophie's empty chair while she was dancing with the flower girls.

And slipped the phone into the pocket of her little denim jacket.

The room went completely silent.

One officer paused the video.

"Zoom in."

The image sharpened.

There was no doubt.

Every movement.

Every glance.

Every deliberate action.

Captured perfectly.

My father lowered his head.

My mother's hands began to shake.

Preston whispered only one word.

May you like

"No..."

But the camera never lied.
