CHAPTER 3: The Wedding That Became a Trial

The ballroom buzzed with disbelief as the officers escorted Preston back inside.
This time...
No one applauded the groom.
No one defended him.
The same guests who had whispered about my daughter now stared at him in horror.
The lead officer addressed the room.
"The video clearly shows Mr. Preston Walker planting his phone in the child's jacket."
A gasp swept across the ballroom.
Then the officer continued.
"The footage also documents him striking an eight-year-old child with a heavy wooden display board."
The handcuffs clicked shut.
The sound echoed beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Preston struggled.
"This is ridiculous!"
"It was an accident!"
"No one was supposed to—"
He stopped speaking.
Too late.
The officer looked directly at him.
"No one was supposed to what?"
He had trapped himself.
His new bride slowly removed her wedding ring.
Tears streamed down her face.
"You used my wedding..." she whispered.
"...to destroy a child."
Without another word, she walked away.
Several guests followed.
The reception ended before the first dance was ever finished.
Meanwhile, Sophie received six stitches above her eyebrow.
The emergency physician assured me she would recover physically.
But while holding my hand, she asked a question that hurt far more than the injury.
"Mommy..."
"Why doesn't Grandma love me?"
I pulled her into my arms.
"There is nothing wrong with you, sweetheart."
"Sometimes adults make terrible choices."
"But those choices never define your worth."
May you like
She nodded quietly before falling asleep.
I promised myself she would never again have to earn love from people unwilling to give it.
