Chapter 5 - The Backup No One Knew About

Hospital security searched the floor.
They found no one matching Preston’s description.
Detective Ruiz requested the building’s camera footage.
A man wearing a baseball cap had entered through the emergency department ten minutes earlier.
He never showed his face.
He left before security reached the elevators.
Lena moved us to a private room under a different name.
She also called a protection specialist named David Mercer.
David was a former Chicago police officer who spoke quietly and noticed everything.
He checked the locks, windows, vents, and adjoining rooms before taking a chair outside the door.
That afternoon, Ruiz returned with unexpected news.
“The flash drive is authentic.”
My fingers tightened around the edge of Sophie’s mattress.
“What was on it?”
“A recording from the rehearsal dinner.”
She opened her notebook.
“Your mother says, ‘Put the phone somewhere the child cannot explain.’”
I closed my eyes.
Ruiz continued.
“Preston says, ‘Evelyn will explode when we accuse Sophie.’”
“And my father?”
“He says, ‘Once she loses control publicly, our attorneys can handle the rest.’”
Lena’s expression hardened.
“That establishes conspiracy.”
“It establishes intent,” Ruiz said.
“Proving the assault was planned is more complicated.”
“He picked up a solid board.”
“I know.”
“Why isn’t he in jail?”
“Because the district attorney wants the footage.”
Ruiz hesitated.
“And because the Whitmore family has spent twenty years donating to the right people.”
At 4:32 p.m., David opened the door.
A young man stood behind him.
He wore jeans, a gray hoodie, and an employee badge from the Whitmore Hotel.
“My name is Marcus Lee.”
He looked exhausted.
“I manage the hotel’s digital security systems.”
Ruiz stood.
“Were you working last night?”
“Yes.”
“Did you delete the footage?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Mr. Grayson used the administrative console.”
“On whose instruction?”
“I heard Mrs. Whitmore tell him to erase the ballroom feed.”
My mother.
Even after everything Camille had revealed, hearing it from another witness hurt.
Ruiz stepped closer.
“Is the footage gone?”
Marcus looked toward the door.
“Not exactly.”
Lena leaned forward.
“Explain.”
“Three months ago, our insurance company required off-site backups.”
“Who has access?”
“Only me.”
“Where is it stored?”
“On an encrypted server outside Illinois.”
Hope rose carefully inside me.
“Then you have the recording.”
Marcus nodded.
“I downloaded a copy.”
He reached into his pocket.
David immediately stopped him.
“Slowly.”
Marcus removed a small external drive.
Before he could hand it to Ruiz, the lights in the hospital room flickered.
Then every monitor beside Sophie’s bed went dark.
An alarm began sounding in the hallway.
May you like
David drew his weapon.
Someone had cut power to the entire floor.
