Chapter 6 - Thirty-Seven Seconds

Emergency lights flooded the room in dim red.

Sophie woke with a frightened gasp.

“Mommy?”

“I’m here.”

David moved to the door.

“Everyone stay away from the hallway.”

The backup generator activated after twelve seconds.

To me, it felt like twelve minutes.

The monitors restarted.

Nurses rushed from room to room.

Marcus stood against the wall, gripping the hard drive.

Ruiz called for additional officers.

The outage had not affected the rest of the hospital.

Only our floor.

Someone had accessed the electrical control room using a stolen maintenance badge.

The intruder escaped before security arrived.

Lena looked at me.

“This is no longer just a family scandal.”

“It never was.”

Ruiz took the hard drive into evidence.

By evening, a digital forensics team had extracted the ballroom footage.

They allowed me to watch it once.

I almost wished they had not.

The recording began twelve minutes before Preston announced his missing phone.

Sophie sat beside me at our table, exactly as I remembered.

She swung her feet beneath the chair.

She ate frosting with the edge of her fork.

She laughed when a groomsman began dancing badly.

Then Preston entered the frame.

He walked behind our table while pretending to greet guests.

His hand moved toward Sophie’s denim jacket.

The entire act took less than two seconds.

He slipped the phone into her pocket.

Then he glanced directly at the nearest camera.

He knew where it was.

He simply believed it had already been disabled.

The recording continued.

Preston accused Sophie.

He pulled the phone from her jacket.

My mother shook her head with rehearsed disappointment.

My father whispered something to a board member.

Then I stepped between Preston and my daughter.

The room watched him become furious.

He crossed the ballroom.

He tore the menu board from its stand.

He raised it.

He swung.

The impact was captured from three separate angles.

So was Sophie collapsing.

So was Preston standing over her.

The camera nearest the entrance had audio.

Thirty-seven seconds after striking her, Preston said something too quietly for most guests to hear.

The microphone caught every word.

“Now sign the shares over, or next time she won’t get up.”

I stopped breathing.

Detective Ruiz paused the recording.

Lena covered her mouth.

Even David looked shaken.

Ruiz turned toward me.

“Mrs. Whitmore, your brother did not lose his temper.”

“I know.”

“This was attempted coercion through violence.”

My phone rang.

The caller ID displayed my father’s name.

I answered.

His voice was calm.

“Come home alone, Evelyn.”

May you like

“Why?”

“Because we need to discuss what happens to Sophie if you release that video.”
