Chapter 2 – The Empire Begins to Collapse

As officers handcuffed Preston, his mother stepped in front of them.
"This is a misunderstanding!"
"My son would never do something like this."
The detective calmly pointed toward the giant screens.
"The cameras disagree."
Robert Whitmore finally spoke.
"We can settle this privately."
The detective's expression never changed.
"A child is in an ambulance because your son attacked her."
"There is nothing private about that."
Across the ballroom, Preston's new bride slowly removed her wedding ring.
She stared at the man she had married less than an hour earlier.
"You planned this?"
Preston struggled against the officers.
"You don't understand!"
"Evelyn has always wanted to destroy this family!"
His wife shook her head.
"No."
"You destroyed it yourself."
She placed the diamond ring on the wedding table and walked away without looking back.
Then something unexpected happened.
Guests began speaking.
One waiter admitted Preston had demanded the security cameras near the head table be turned away earlier that afternoon.
A bridesmaid confessed she had seen Preston carrying the phone after he claimed it was missing.
Another guest admitted Preston had quietly joked,
"Tonight everyone will finally see what Evelyn's daughter really is."
Each testimony added another brick to the wall closing around him.
Meanwhile, Sophie received eight stitches at the hospital.
When she finally woke, she looked at Evelyn with frightened eyes.
"Mom..."
"Do Grandma and Grandpa still love me?"
Evelyn felt tears burn her eyes.
She brushed Sophie's hair away from the bandage.
"The people who truly love you would never stand still while someone hurts you."
"And from today forward..."
"We'll only keep people who choose us."
Outside, every television station in Chicago was already broadcasting the hotel footage.
