Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Scars

For several endless seconds, Enzo DeLuca forgot how to breathe.

Harper remained curled on the hardwood floor, one trembling hand clutching the torn lace across her chest while the other shielded the ruined skin on her back. Her shoulders shook with silent sobs she was desperately trying to suppress, as though crying itself might earn another punishment.

"I'm sorry..." she whispered again. "Please... I didn't mean to ruin the dress."

Enzo didn't hear the words.

He was counting.

One scar.

Five.

Ten.

Twenty.

The older ones were white and thick, stretching diagonally across her shoulder blades. Newer marks, still faintly pink, crossed over them in cruel, deliberate lines. They weren't random injuries. They were systematic.

Someone had whipped her.

Again.

And again.

And again.

His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"Who did this?"

Harper immediately shook her head.

"I fell."

The lie came too quickly.

"You fell," Enzo repeated quietly.

She nodded without looking at him.

"Down the stairs."

"Repeatedly?"

Silence.

Enzo had interrogated cartel accountants, corrupt politicians, and hired killers. He knew exactly what fear sounded like.

This wasn't fear of him.

This was the fear of telling the truth.

He slowly removed his tuxedo jacket and draped it over her shoulders.

The simple gesture made Harper flinch.

Not because she expected kindness—

Because she didn't understand it.

"You don't have to cover the dress," Enzo said softly.

She stared at him in confusion.

"The dress doesn't matter."

Those words broke something inside her.

For the first time all night, tears escaped.

Real tears.

Not polite ones.

The kind that came after years of holding them back.

"I tried so hard..." she whispered. "Father said if I embarrassed him tonight..."

Her voice disappeared.

Enzo knelt several feet away, careful not to crowd her.

"What would he do?"

Harper looked toward the fireplace instead of answering.

"He said I'd remember who owned me."

The room became impossibly quiet.

Enzo suddenly remembered something from the reception.

When Preston kissed Harper's cheek before leaving...

She hadn't looked sad.

She had looked terrified.

Every guest had mistaken fear for grief.

Including him.

A sharp knock interrupted the silence.

"Boss?"

It was Marco, Enzo's head of security.

"We found something during the Whitcomb property search."

Enzo didn't take his eyes off Harper.

"What?"

"A locked room."

Marco hesitated.

"And... children's belts."

The words hit Harper like a bullet.

She buried her face in her hands.

"No..."

She whispered it with absolute despair.

"Please don't go there."

Enzo slowly stood.

His expression had changed completely.

He had entered this marriage planning to destroy Preston Whitcomb.

Now...

Destroying him no longer felt like revenge.

It felt like justice.
