Chapter 2: The Prison Hidden Inside a Mansion

By sunrise, the DeLuca convoy was already outside the Whitcomb estate in Lake Forest.
Federal agents arrived only minutes later.
Preston had expected lawyers.
Instead, he found search warrants.
"What is the meaning of this?" Preston demanded as investigators entered the house.
Enzo stepped through the front door without hurry.
"I have one question."
Preston sneered.
"I'm done answering your questions."
Enzo's voice remained perfectly calm.
"Then answer the government's."
Two FBI agents walked past Preston carrying sealed evidence boxes.
Another detective descended from the second floor.
"We found it."
Everyone turned.
The detective held up an old leather belt inside a clear evidence bag.
Dark stains still marked the cracked leather.
Behind him came another officer.
"And journals."
Another.
"Medical supplies."
Another.
"A hidden security system."
Preston's confidence began to crack.
"This is ridiculous."
Enzo climbed the grand staircase toward the locked room Marco had described.
The bedroom looked untouched.
Expensive wallpaper.
Designer furniture.
Fresh flowers.
Everything looked perfect.
Until he opened the walk-in closet.
At the very back stood a narrow wooden door.
Barely noticeable.
The lock had already been forced open.
Inside...
The walls were bare concrete.
No windows.
Only a thin mattress.
A bucket.
And dozens of tally marks scratched into the wall.
Thousands of them.
One for every day.
Enzo slowly reached down and picked up a small stuffed rabbit lying in the corner.
One ear had been sewn back together by hand.
Harper's childhood.
Reduced to a prison cell.
Marco quietly spoke behind him.
"Our forensic team found blood."
Enzo closed his eyes.
Nathan had died because of Preston Whitcomb.
But Harper...
She had been dying for twenty-six years.
Downstairs, Preston continued shouting at federal agents.
"My daughter is mentally unstable!"
"She hurts herself!"
"She's making everything up!"
Before anyone could respond, another vehicle stopped outside.
Harper stepped out.
Wrapped in one of Enzo's long black coats.
She looked at the mansion she had grown up in.
Not with nostalgia.
With horror.
She slowly walked through the front door.
Every officer instinctively moved aside.
She stopped in front of her father.
For the first time in her life...
She did not lower her eyes.
"I was six," she said quietly.
"The first time you used the belt."
The room froze.
"You said it was because I spilled milk."
Preston's face twisted.
"Harper—"
"I was eleven when you locked me in the closet for four days."
"Stop talking."
"I was fifteen when Mother tried to stop you."
His voice rose.
"Enough!"
Harper didn't even blink.
"You broke her arm."
Silence exploded through the mansion.
An elderly housekeeper standing near the kitchen suddenly burst into tears.
"I wanted to help her," she whispered to investigators.
"But he threatened to kill us both."
One confession became two.
Then five.
Then twelve.
Employees.
Drivers.
Nannies.
Doctors.
Every secret Preston had buried beneath money began climbing into the light.

And this time...
No amount of wealth could force the truth back underground.
