Chapter 14 - THE BOARDROOM UNDERGROUND

Christopher answered.
Annalise didn’t greet him.
“Is he alive?”
Christopher looked at Malcolm.
“Yes.”
“Pity.”
“Where are you?”
“You know.”
“Pierce Tower?”
Silence confirmed it.
Christopher stepped away from Tommy.
“What did Dad do to your mother?”
Annalise laughed.
“He hasn’t told you?”
“No.”
“Ask him.”
“I’m asking you.”
“My mother was Evelyn Hart.”
Christopher recognized the name.
A young activist who disappeared forty-three years earlier.
Her case remained unsolved.
“Dad said you both died.”
“Yes.”
“He lied.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Malcolm found us before Estelle did.”
Christopher looked at his father.
“He moved me.”
“To protect you?”
Annalise’s voice hardened.
“That’s his favorite word.”
“What about Evelyn?”
“He gave her a choice.”
Christopher frowned.
“What choice?”
“Leave the country without me.”
“Or?”
“Risk Estelle finding us both.”
Christopher stared.
“What did she choose?”
“She refused to leave me.”
“So Dad…”
Annalise’s voice broke.
“He drugged her.”
Christopher looked toward Malcolm.
“She woke during transport.”
“She fought.”
“The car crashed.”
Christopher closed his eyes.
“She died.”
“Yes.”
“Accident?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“It matters to you because you still want heroes.”
Christopher had no answer.
Annalise continued.
“Malcolm buried her under another name.”
“Then sent me away.”
“I spent forty years believing I was abandoned.”
Christopher looked toward Malcolm.
Another life stolen through protection.
“What are you doing at the tower?”
“Ending the Pierce system.”
“How?”
“You’ll see.”
The call ended.
Christopher told Torres.
They moved immediately.
Malcolm required surgery.
He refused transport until Christopher leaned close.
“You do not get to die before answering everything.”
Malcolm smiled weakly.
“That sounded like your mother.”
Christopher stepped back.
“No.”
“It sounded like your son.”
For the first time, Malcolm looked proud.
Christopher hated how much he needed that.
He left Tommy with Yvette and federal protection.
Then raced to Manhattan.
Pierce Tower was already surrounded.
Employees filled sidewalks.
Someone had triggered a building evacuation.
Christopher entered through the secure executive entrance.
Torres stayed beside him.
The elevators were disabled.
They climbed twenty-eight floors.
Christopher reached the boardroom breathless.
The doors stood open.
Annalise sat at the head of the table.
A dozen Pierce directors sat around her.
No weapons visible.
No obvious hostages.
Christopher slowed.
“What is this?”
Annalise looked at him.
“A vote.”
The directors looked terrified.
Christopher entered.
“On what?”
“Dissolution.”
He stared.
“You cannot dissolve Pierce Consolidated in one meeting.”
“No.”
Annalise smiled.
“But controlling shareholders can force the board to begin.”
Christopher looked at the directors.
“How many shares do you have?”
“Enough.”
“That trust claim hasn’t been validated.”
“It has now.”
She slid a document across the table.
A federal probate court had provisionally recognized Malcolm’s paternity.
Annalise held senior-heir rights.
Christopher stared.
“You filed this months ago.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Dad was alive.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He found me.”
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
Christopher felt anger.
“Everyone knew everything except me.”
Annalise almost smiled.
“That seems to be your family role.”
Christopher hated that she was right.
“What do you want?”
“The board agrees to transfer all environmental restitution funds.”
“To whom?”
“The communities Estelle poisoned.”
Christopher looked at the directors.
Some appeared angry.
Others ashamed.
“That’s billions.”
“Yes.”
Christopher nodded.
“Do it.”
Annalise stared.
“What?”
“Do it.”
A director interrupted.
“Christopher.”
He turned.
“Those liabilities are contested.”
Christopher looked at him.
“Were people harmed?”
The man said nothing.
“Then stop hiding behind vocabulary.”
Annalise watched him carefully.
Christopher sat.
“What else?”
“Release every internal environmental report.”
“Do it.”
“Waive nondisclosure agreements related to contamination.”
“Do it.”
One director stood.
“You cannot unilaterally agree.”
Christopher looked at him.
“Then vote me out.”
The man sat.
Annalise leaned back.
“You’re making this disappointingly easy.”
Christopher stared.
“You kidnapped Rachel and Adrian.”
“I needed leverage.”
“You threatened the archive.”
“I needed leverage.”
“You sound like Estelle.”
Annalise’s face hardened.
Christopher continued.
“That’s what she teaches everyone.”
“Power first.”
“Justification second.”
Annalise looked away.
Torres moved closer.
“We still need to discuss the kidnapping.”
Annalise laughed.
“I assumed.”
Christopher looked at the floor.
“Where is the archive node?”
Annalise pointed beneath the table.
“Under us.”
“How do we access it?”
“With Malcolm’s key.”
Christopher frowned.
“You stole it.”
“Yes.”
She placed the pendant on the table.
“Then why are we talking?”
“Because it doesn’t work.”
Christopher stared.
“Why?”
Annalise looked frustrated.
“Malcolm changed the encryption.”
Christopher almost smiled.
“Apparently he stopped trusting you.”
“He stopped trusting everyone.”
Christopher looked at the directors.
“Leave.”
They did.
Annalise waited.
Christopher picked up the pendant.
“What does the node contain?”
“Corporate financial evidence.”
“Different from Blackwater?”
“Yes.”
“This is the active network.”
Christopher’s blood went cold.
“Estelle still has access?”
“Limited.”
“Can she destroy it?”
Annalise looked uncertain.
“Maybe.”
Christopher called the federal cyber team.
They began securing the system.
Then every screen in the boardroom turned on.
Estelle appeared.
She was sitting in federal detention.
Christopher stared.
“How are you doing this?”
She smiled.
“I built the company.”
Annalise stood.
“You told me Malcolm murdered my mother.”
“He did.”
“You left out the part where he was running from you.”
Estelle tilted her head.
“Context again.”
Annalise’s hands curled into fists.
Estelle continued.
“You are disappointing me.”
Annalise laughed.
“You abandoned me.”
“I removed an inconvenience.”
Christopher saw the pain hit Annalise.
Estelle did too.
She enjoyed it.
Christopher stepped between them.
“What do you want?”
Estelle looked at him.
“Emma.”
“No.”
“Then the tower burns.”
Christopher froze.
Torres spoke.
“Bomb threat?”
Estelle smiled.
“Not a threat.”
Alarms began.
Fire suppression systems activated.
But no fire appeared.
Then the building shook.
An explosion erupted far below.
Christopher moved toward the windows.
Smoke rose from the underground parking structure.
Torres shouted into her radio.
Another explosion.
The power failed.
Emergency lights activated.
Estelle remained on the screens through independent backup.
“You have six minutes.”
Christopher stared.
“Six minutes for what?”
“To bring Emma to the lobby.”
“She’s not here.”
“Then you have a problem.”
Christopher knew she was bluffing.
Emma was hours away.
Estelle knew that.
This was about something else.
“Why the lobby?”
Estelle smiled.
“Because beneath it is the final vault.”
Christopher stared.
Annalise looked confused.
“I didn’t know about another vault.”
“Of course not.”
Estelle continued.
“Malcolm built it after Samuel died.”
Christopher looked at the pendant.
“What’s inside?”
Estelle’s eyes became cold.
“The only thing I ever wanted.”
Christopher waited.
“The original Pierce deed.”
He almost laughed.
“A property deed?”
“Not to property.”
“To ownership.”
Christopher frowned.
Estelle explained.
“When Pierce Consolidated was founded, ownership was placed through a private sovereign trust.”
“The deed determines who controls every downstream asset.”
Christopher felt dread.
“Who is named?”
Estelle smiled.
“Not me.”
“Who?”
She looked directly at him.
“Emma.”
Christopher’s heart stopped.
“How?”
“Malcolm changed it.”
Annalise whispered.
“When?”
Estelle answered.
“Six years ago.”
Christopher understood.
After Rachel’s crash.
Malcolm protected Emma by giving her ownership.
But in doing so, he painted a target on her back.
Estelle continued.
“Bring me the deed.”
“Or?”
“The building collapses.”
Torres barked orders.
Bomb teams moved.
Christopher looked at the floor.
“How do we reach the vault?”
Annalise pointed toward the private elevator.
“Sub-basement.”
The elevator needed biometric authorization.
Christopher placed his hand against the scanner.
Denied.
Annalise tried.
Denied.
Then the screen displayed.
AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY REQUIRED.
Christopher closed his eyes.
“Emma.”
Estelle laughed through the speakers.
“Now you understand.”
The building needed Emma to open the vault.
And Estelle had known Emma was not there.
Christopher looked at the countdown.
04:31.
He suddenly realized.
“She doesn’t want us to open it.”
Annalise frowned.
“What?”
“She wants the building evacuated.”
Torres looked toward the doors.
“Why?”
Christopher stared at Estelle.
“Because someone else is already below.”
Estelle stopped smiling.
Christopher knew he was right.
He grabbed the security tablet.
A hidden elevator had activated three minutes earlier.
Passenger authorization.
M.P.
Malcolm Pierce.
Christopher stared.
His father was supposed to be in surgery.
He called the hospital.
The answer came immediately.
Malcolm never arrived.
The ambulance had been intercepted.
Christopher looked at Annalise.
“Dad is inside the vault.”
Annalise’s face changed.
“Why?”
Christopher remembered Malcolm’s words.
Destroy the archive.
Protect Emma.
Again.
Always protection through disappearance.
“He’s going to destroy the deed.”
Estelle screamed through the screen.
“Stop him!”
Christopher turned.
For the first time, she sounded desperate.
A third explosion shook the tower.
The countdown showed.
03:02.
Christopher looked toward the private elevator.
“Get everyone out.”
Torres grabbed him.
“You too.”
Christopher shook his head.
“My father is down there.”
“He made his choice.”
“No.”
Christopher looked toward Annalise.
“He has been making choices for everyone for forty years.”
“Tonight he answers before he chooses anything else.”
Annalise stepped beside him.
“I’m coming.”
Christopher looked at her.
“Why?”
Her eyes hardened.
“Because he owes me a mother.”
They forced the elevator open.
A maintenance ladder descended into darkness.
Christopher climbed down.
Annalise followed.
Above them, Pierce Tower continued shaking.
May you like
Below them, Malcolm Pierce was waiting beside the document that could either save Emma’s future or erase the Pierce empire forever.
