Chapter 8 - BLACKWATER

Blackwater Island lay fourteen miles off the Maine coast.
The sea surrounding it was notoriously violent.
No commercial ferry traveled there.
No public map showed the private dock.
Christopher remembered visiting once when he was nine.
His father told him the island was where the Pierce family stored things too dangerous for banks.
Christopher had assumed he meant art.
He was wrong.
By noon, federal agents were involved.
Christopher gave them the photograph.
He gave them the ledger.
He kept the brass key.
Something told him the key still mattered.
Authorities insisted Christopher remain on the mainland.
He ignored them.
A Coast Guard helicopter carried a tactical team toward the island.
Christopher traveled aboard a separate vessel with Detective Lena Torres, the investigator now leading the kidnapping case.
Torres had no patience for Pierce family mythology.
Christopher liked her immediately.
“You understand you may be walking into a hostage situation.”
“Yes.”
“You understand bringing the ledger may be exactly what they want.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you carrying it?”
Christopher held up a duplicate.
“The original is secured elsewhere.”
Torres nodded.
“Finally, someone in this family does something sensible.”
Christopher almost smiled.
Almost.
They reached Blackwater near dusk.
The island rose from fog like a broken fortress.
An old granite house stood above the cliffs.
No lights.
No vehicles.
No movement.
The tactical team entered first.
Christopher followed when cleared.
Inside, the house smelled abandoned.
Dust covered furniture.
Then they found fresh footprints.
Small footprints.
Emma.
Christopher followed them.
They led downstairs.
A steel door waited beneath the staircase.
The brass key fit the lock.
Christopher looked at Torres.
She raised her weapon.
He turned the key.
The door opened.
A tunnel descended into darkness.
The walls were carved directly into rock.
Electric lights flickered on automatically.
Christopher remembered Samuel’s note.
Beneath the ledger.
Maybe the ledger wasn’t only financial records.
Maybe it was also a map.
He opened the book.
Tiny numbers appeared beside several entries.
Coordinates.
Tunnel markers.
They followed them.
At the end of the corridor stood another door.
This one was open.
Christopher stepped through.
Malcolm Pierce stood inside.
Emma was beside him.
Christopher ran to her.
“Daddy!”
Emma broke away from Malcolm.
Christopher dropped to his knees.
He wrapped her in his arms.
For several seconds, nothing else existed.
Emma cried into his shoulder.
“You came.”
“Always.”
“You promised.”
“I know.”
He kissed her hair.
“I’m sorry.”
Malcolm watched silently.
Torres entered with officers.
“We need everyone to keep their hands visible.”
Malcolm raised his.
Christopher stood with Emma behind him.
“Where are Rachel and Adrian?”
Malcolm’s expression changed.
“I don’t know.”
Christopher stepped closer.
“They were brought here.”
“No.”
“You’re lying.”
“I brought Emma here.”
“Why?”
“To destroy the archive.”
Christopher stared.
“Where is it?”
Malcolm looked toward a steel wall.
“Behind there.”
Torres approached.
“Mr. Pierce, you’re going to explain everything.”
Malcolm laughed softly.
“If we had three days, perhaps.”
“We have tonight.”
Malcolm looked at Emma.
“No.”
“We have eleven days.”
Christopher frowned.
“What happens in eleven days?”
Malcolm replied.
“The system activates.”
“You said that.”
“You still don’t understand.”
Christopher’s jaw tightened.
“Then make me understand.”
Malcolm sat.
He looked suddenly old.
“I built the original archive with Samuel.”
Yvette’s husband.
Christopher listened.
“We discovered Estelle had been collecting leverage for years.”
“Leverage?”
“Evidence.”
“Affairs.”
“Bribes.”
“Illegal transfers.”
“Medical secrets.”
“Confidential intelligence.”
“She kept everything.”
“Why?”
“Power.”
Christopher looked around.
“You helped her.”
“At first.”
Malcolm didn’t deny it.
“I believed information protected the company.”
“And when did you change your mind?”
“When she started manufacturing the crimes she wanted evidence of.”
Christopher stared.
“What does that mean?”
“She stopped documenting corruption.”
“She started creating it.”
“Bribing officials.”
“Entrapping executives.”
“Planting evidence.”
“Then blackmailing them.”
Torres’s expression hardened.
“You’re describing organized criminal conduct.”
Malcolm looked at her.
“I am describing my wife.”
Christopher thought of childhood dinners.
Charity galas.
Awards.
His mother smiling beside presidents.
All of it built on coercion.
“Samuel discovered it.”
“Yes.”
“Rachel?”
“Rachel discovered environmental reports proving Pierce subsidiaries poisoned groundwater near three communities.”
Christopher closed his eyes.
“How many people died?”
“We never knew.”
“Estelle buried the reports.”
“And Rachel found them.”
“Yes.”
“She threatened to expose everything.”
“So Mom had her car hit.”
Malcolm nodded.
“I found out before the second collision.”
Christopher stared.
“Second?”
“The first car forced Rachel off the road.”
“The second was supposed to strike her vehicle after it stopped.”
“To ensure the outcome.”
Christopher’s stomach turned.
“I arrived first.”
“You pulled her out.”
“Yes.”
“Then you let them think she died.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice.”
Malcolm looked at him.
“I made the wrong ones.”
Christopher pointed toward Emma.
“She lost six years with her mother.”
“I know.”
“You lost five years with us.”
“I know.”
“You let your own sons bury you.”
Malcolm’s face cracked.
“I know.”
Christopher wanted to hate him.
He did hate him.
But hatred didn’t simplify anything.
Torres asked.
“Where is Estelle?”
Malcolm shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“You were with her this morning.”
“She brought Emma.”
“Then?”
“I took Emma away.”
Christopher frowned.
“How?”
“I threatened to expose her.”
“And she let you walk?”
Malcolm smiled bitterly.
“Estelle never lets anyone walk.”
An alarm sounded.
Everyone turned.
Malcolm’s face drained.
“No.”
“What?”
He rushed toward a control panel.
A red light flashed.
ARCHIVE ACCESS DETECTED.
Christopher stepped forward.
“Who?”
Malcolm typed.
The screen displayed a user code.
A.P.
Christopher stared.
“Adrian?”
Malcolm shook his head.
“No.”
Christopher looked at him.
“Those initials are Adrian Pierce.”
Malcolm’s voice dropped.
“They are also Annalise Pierce.”
Christopher froze.
“Who is Annalise?”
Malcolm looked at Emma.
Then at Christopher.
“My daughter.”
Christopher stared.
“You have a daughter?”
“Yes.”
“With Mom?”
“No.”
The room went silent.
Christopher almost laughed.
“Of course.”
Malcolm continued.
“Before Estelle.”
“Annalise was born forty-three years ago.”
“Where is she?”
“I thought she was dead.”
Christopher stared.
“This family has a terrible habit of burying living people.”
Malcolm ignored the insult.
“Her mother disappeared when Annalise was an infant.”
“I was told both died.”
“Estelle arranged the records.”
Christopher understood.
“Why?”
“Because Annalise was my firstborn.”
“The original controlling heir.”
Christopher looked toward the screen.
“If she’s alive…”
Malcolm nodded.
“Emma’s claim may not be fifty-one percent.”
Christopher frowned.
“How much?”
“If Annalise proves paternity, she controls sixty percent of the senior trust.”
Christopher’s mind raced.
“Then why target Emma?”
“Because Emma controls the archive.”
Another alarm sounded.
This time the steel wall unlocked.
Malcolm shouted.
“Everyone back.”
The doors opened.
A huge underground chamber appeared.
Rows of physical files filled shelves.
Servers hummed behind glass.
At the center stood a woman.
Tall.
Dark hair streaked with silver.
Christopher had never seen her.
But she had Malcolm’s eyes.
She held a pistol.
Rachel stood beside her.
Adrian sat on the floor.
His shoulder was bleeding.
Emma gasped.
“Mommy.”
Rachel looked toward Emma.
Everything stopped.
Rachel dropped the folder she was holding.
“Emma.”
Emma ran.
Christopher instinctively reached for her.
Then stopped.
Rachel dropped to her knees.
Emma crashed into her arms.
Rachel made a sound Christopher would never forget.
Six years of grief came out in one breath.
She held Emma.
Kissed her hair.
Her cheeks.
Her hands.
Emma cried against her.
“Mommy.”
Christopher turned away for one second.
Even Torres lowered her weapon slightly.
Then the unknown woman spoke.
“Touching.”
Christopher looked at her.
“Annalise?”
She smiled.
“So Dad finally told you.”
Malcolm stepped forward.
“Put the weapon down.”
Annalise aimed at him.
“You don’t get to call yourself Dad.”
Malcolm stopped.
Rachel held Emma behind her.
Adrian struggled upright.
Christopher looked at him.
“Are you all right?”
“I’ll live.”
Annalise laughed.
“Maybe.”
Torres raised her weapon.
“Put the gun down.”
Annalise looked at her.
“You have no idea what room you’re standing in.”
“I know you’re holding a firearm during a kidnapping investigation.”
“Kidnapping?”
Annalise smiled.
“I rescued Rachel from Adrian.”
Rachel glared.
“You kidnapped us.”
“Technical disagreement.”
Christopher looked at Rachel.
Their eyes met for the first time in six years.
Neither spoke.
Too much lived between them.
Annalise walked toward the central terminal.
“Samuel built a failsafe.”
Malcolm’s face hardened.
“Don’t.”
Annalise entered a command.
The servers began humming louder.
Christopher stepped forward.
“What are you doing?”
“Freeing the truth.”
Malcolm shouted.
“You’ll kill people.”
Annalise’s expression turned cold.
“People already died.”
She looked at Christopher.
“Samuel.”
“Rachel.”
“Whole towns.”
“And your precious family kept eating dinner.”
Christopher stared.
“What happens if you release it?”
“Everything becomes public.”
Rachel shook her head.
“You promised selective disclosure.”
“I changed my mind.”
Adrian stood.
“Annalise.”
She aimed at him.
“Sit down.”
Emma began crying.
Christopher moved in front of her.
“Enough.”
Annalise looked at Emma.
“For twenty years, Estelle Pierce used secrets to control people.”
“Tonight, those secrets stop belonging to her.”
Christopher asked.
“And the innocent names?”
Annalise hesitated.
Malcolm had told the truth.
Annalise knew innocent people would be exposed.
Christopher saw it.
“You don’t care.”
Her jaw tightened.
“I care about justice.”
“No.”
Christopher stepped closer.
“You care about punishment.”
Annalise’s hand shook.
“Don’t lecture me.”
“I’m not.”
“You grew up inside the mansion she stole from me.”
“I grew up believing my family was something it wasn’t.”
“You still got a family.”
Christopher glanced at Malcolm.
“That is becoming debatable.”
For the first time, Annalise almost smiled.
Then the lights flickered.
Malcolm looked toward the monitor.
His face changed.
“Someone else entered the island network.”
Annalise turned.
“Who?”
The system displayed another code.
E.P.
Estelle.
Malcolm whispered.
“She found us.”
The outer security cameras appeared.
Boats approached Blackwater from three directions.
At least forty armed men.
Torres grabbed her radio.
No signal.
Malcolm tried the satellite system.
Dead.
Annalise stared at the screen.
“She jammed communications.”
Christopher looked at Emma.
Rachel held her.
For the first time, Christopher, Rachel, Adrian, Malcolm, and Annalise all stood in the same room.
Every secret had led them here.
And Estelle Pierce had just surrounded the island.
Malcolm opened a weapons cabinet.
Christopher stared.
“What are you doing?”
Malcolm looked at him.
“What I should have done thirty years ago.”
He loaded a shotgun.
May you like
“Standing between my family and my wife.”
