Chapter 19 - HER MOTHER’S VOICE

Roberto did not open the envelope alone.

He brought it to Sofía.

They sat at the piano together.

María stood nearby.

“This belonged to Mommy.”

Sofía reached out.

“Can I touch it?”

Roberto placed the envelope in her hands.

Inside was a memory card.

And a letter.

The memory card contained audio recordings.

Elena documenting Vanessa’s calls.

Photographs.

Screenshots.

Names.

Dates.

Enough evidence to prove Vanessa had stalked the family before the crash.

One recording captured Vanessa directly.

“You don’t understand.”

Vanessa’s younger voice sounded angry.

“Roberto is supposed to have more than this ordinary family life.”

Elena replied calmly.

“He already has everything he wants.”

“You don’t know what he wants.”

“I know my husband.”

Vanessa laughed.

“No woman knows her husband completely.”

Elena’s final response was quiet.

“But I know my daughter.”

“And anyone who threatens her will never belong in our family.”

Sofía pressed her fingers against her lips.

“That’s Mommy?”

“Yes.”

Roberto’s voice broke.

Sofía smiled through tears.

“I forgot her voice.”

He pulled her close.

They listened to every recording.

The final file was different.

Elena had recorded it directly for Sofía.

“My sweet girl.”

“If you ever hear this, you may be older.”

“You may not remember every story I told you.”

“But I need you to remember something more important.”

“You were never responsible for anything that happened to me.”

“You are the best thing I ever did.”

“You made me brave.”

“You made your father softer.”

“You made our home alive.”

“And whatever happens, never let anyone convince you that needing help makes you weak.”

Sofía began crying.

Not the frightened tears Roberto had seen that first night.

These were different.

Grief finally being allowed to become love again.

Elena continued.

“Your father will make mistakes.”

“He works too much.”

“He thinks money can fix things that only time and presence can heal.”

Roberto laughed through tears.

María smiled.

“But he loves you more than his own life.”

“So make him come home.”

Sofía reached for Roberto’s hand.

Elena’s voice softened.

“And Roberto, if you are listening too, stop trying to protect Sofía from the whole world.”

“Just make sure she always knows she can tell you when the world hurts her.”

The recording ended.

For a long time, nobody moved.

The evidence destroyed Vanessa’s remaining defense.

Her trial lasted six weeks.

Sebastian testified.

Dr. Feld testified.

Richard Bell’s son testified.

María testified.

And eventually Sofía spoke in a closed courtroom with a child advocate beside her.

Vanessa watched without emotion.

Until Sofía said one sentence.

“I wasn’t afraid because I was blind.”

“I was afraid because she thought nobody would believe me.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked away.

The jury deliberated less than a day.

Guilty.

On every major count.

When the judge announced the sentence, Roberto did not feel victorious.

He felt tired.

But outside the courthouse, Sofía took his hand.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Can we go home now?”

Roberto smiled.

“Yes.”

This time, home meant something different.
