Chapter 4 - WHAT WAS IN THE TEA

The recovered footage lasted only twenty-three seconds.

There was no audio.

But Roberto did not need audio.

Vanessa entered the kitchen.

She looked over her shoulder.

Then she opened a cabinet that María said she never used.

She removed a small bottle.

She squeezed several drops into Sofía’s tea.

Then she returned the bottle to the cabinet.

Roberto watched the footage three times.

Tomas stood beside him.

“Can you identify the bottle?”

“No.”

Roberto paused the frame.

“Enhance it.”

The label remained blurry.

But the shape was distinctive.

Small.

Amber glass.

White cap.

Roberto called the family physician.

Dr. Castillo arrived shortly after midnight.

He examined the remaining tea.

Then the bottle María found hidden behind several jars of imported spices.

The physician’s expression changed immediately.

“This is clonazepam solution.”

Roberto stared at him.

“What does that mean for a child?”

“In an inappropriate dose?”

“Drowsiness.”

“Poor coordination.”

“Confusion.”

“Memory problems.”

Roberto felt his knees weaken.

All the evaluations.

All the doctors.

All the moments he had been told Sofía seemed tired, confused, or unstable.

Vanessa had not simply abused her.

She had been manufacturing symptoms.

“Could it damage her?”

“Repeated misuse can be dangerous.”

Dr. Castillo looked horrified.

“Was this prescribed?”

“No.”

The doctor placed the bottle in a sealed evidence bag.

“Call the police.”

Roberto looked upstairs.

He wanted Vanessa removed immediately.

But another thought stopped him.

Why?

Why drug Sofía?

Cruelty alone did not explain the deleted footage.

It did not explain the deliberate manipulation of medical symptoms.

Someone this careful wanted something.

Roberto called his attorney, Daniel Reeves.

Daniel had represented his companies for fourteen years.

He arrived before 1:00 a.m.

When Roberto explained everything, the attorney became pale.

“There’s something you need to see.”

Daniel opened his laptop.

“Vanessa asked my office for copies of several estate documents last month.”

Roberto stared at him.

“What documents?”

“Your trust.”

“Medical power of attorney.”

“Guardianship provisions for Sofía.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“She said you were updating your estate plan.”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“She knew enough personal details that my junior associate believed her.”

Roberto’s blood ran cold.

“What happens to Sofía if I die?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“You named Vanessa temporary guardian until the court confirms permanent placement.”

Roberto had signed that amendment eight months earlier.

Vanessa had described it as practical.

A way to prevent Sofía from being placed temporarily with strangers if something happened to him.

He had believed her.

“And the trust?”

“Sofía inherits the controlling interest.”

“Vanessa receives a lifetime residence and annual allowance as guardian.”

“How much?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Approximately eight million dollars annually.”

Silence filled the room.

Roberto looked back at the frozen video of Vanessa pouring medication into a child’s tea.

The situation had just changed again.

This was no longer a woman losing patience with a child.

This was a woman creating a record that Sofía was incapable of functioning independently.

And if Roberto disappeared from the picture, Vanessa stood to control almost everything.

Daniel closed the laptop.

“I need to ask you something.”

Roberto looked at him.

“Have you had any unusual health problems recently?”

Roberto frowned.

“Why?”

“Because three weeks ago Vanessa called my office.”

“She asked what would happen if you became medically incapacitated instead of dying.”

The room went completely still.

Upstairs, Sofía slept under María’s watch.

Downstairs, Roberto realized his daughter might not have been Vanessa’s only target.
