Chapter 1 – The Judge They Never Expected

The room fell into absolute silence.
"Did someone just say Judge Vance?"
The security supervisor looked at Julia with newfound curiosity.
Julia took a slow breath despite the pain that still radiated through her body.
"Call him," she said quietly.
"My father."
Evelyn's face drained of color.
"No..."
She whispered the word before she could stop herself.
Julia's father wasn't just any judge.
Judge William Vance had spent thirty years on the state appellate court with a reputation for absolute integrity. He had prosecuted powerful families, politicians, and corporate executives without fear or favoritism.
Years earlier, Julia had refused to use her father's influence after marrying Daniel.
"I wanted them to accept me for who I am," she once told him.
Instead, the Vance family assumed she came from an ordinary middle-class background.
Now that mistake was catching up with them.
Within twenty minutes, Judge William Vance walked into the hospital surrounded by two court security officers.
He didn't raise his voice.
He simply looked at the unsigned adoption agreement lying on the floor.
Then at Evelyn.
"Explain."
Evelyn forced a nervous smile.
"It was only a misunderstanding."
Judge Vance picked up the documents.
His expression hardened.
"This document attempts to permanently surrender parental rights less than twelve hours after childbirth."
He slowly turned toward Daniel.
"Did you know about this?"
Daniel lowered his head.
"...Yes."
Julia closed her eyes.
His answer hurt more than labor itself.
Judge Vance spoke only one sentence.
"You didn't betray your wife today."
"You betrayed your children."
The hospital director immediately suspended all visitation rights while police investigators photographed every page of the agreement.

The Vance family's wealth carried no weight inside that hospital room.
