Chapter 2 – The Family Secret

Three days later, investigators uncovered the truth.

The adoption papers had never been about giving one baby a better life.

They were about money.

Years before Daniel married Julia, the Vance family business had quietly accumulated enormous debt.

Only one asset remained beyond creditors' reach—a century-old family trust.

According to the trust's forgotten clause, ownership would automatically pass to the first biological grandchild carrying the Vance name.

But there was another condition.

Only one legal heir could inherit.

If twins were born, the estate had to be divided equally.

That would force the family to sell nearly everything they owned.

Evelyn refused to let that happen.

Her solution was simple.

Erase one grandchild from the family record through a private adoption arranged before the birth certificate was finalized.

She expected Julia to be exhausted enough to sign without understanding.

Instead...

Everything collapsed.

When police searched Evelyn's office, they discovered emails with an attorney discussing forged consent forms, secret payments, and plans to remove one child before hospital discharge.

Daniel finally confessed.

"My mother said it was the only way to save the family."

Julia stared at him.

"And you believed your family's fortune mattered more than your own child?"

He couldn't answer.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded the Vance family.

The story spread nationwide.

"The Million-Dollar Twin."

"The Mother Who Refused to Sign."

The perfect image Evelyn had spent decades building disappeared overnight.

Meanwhile, Julia sat quietly beside both bassinets.
