Chapter 1 — The First Crack

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

The recording echoed through the grand living room like a judge delivering a sentence.

"Increase his dose before the notary gets here. I need him too confused to ask questions."

Marcus stared at his mother.

Vivian's lips parted, but no words came.

Richard Hale slowly turned toward her, the pain in his body suddenly overshadowed by the betrayal in his heart.

"You..." he whispered.

Vivian recovered first.

"That recording is fake."

"It was edited."

"She's manipulating you."

I calmly locked my phone.

"I expected that answer."

From my briefcase, I removed a thick folder stamped with the seal of a Dallas District Court filing.

Marcus stepped forward.

"You can't just walk in here making accusations."

"I already did."

I slid another document across the coffee table.

"The forensic audio report."

Another.

"The toxicology analysis from Dad's blood work."

Another.

"The security company's maintenance records."

Vivian frowned.

"What security records?"

"The ones showing every camera in this house mysteriously stopped recording for exactly forty-three minutes."

Marcus's face turned pale.

Dad looked from one paper to another.

"I never signed willingly..."

"You didn't," I answered softly.

"You were drugged."

A knock interrupted us.

Three attorneys entered first.

Behind them came two detectives from Dallas Police Financial Crimes Division.

Finally, the elderly notary who had supposedly witnessed every signature walked through the door.

The moment he saw Vivian, his shoulders slumped.

"I... I need to correct my statement."

Vivian screamed.

"You promised!"

The old man lowered his eyes.

"I can't keep lying anymore."

May you like

Silence swallowed the mansion.

The empire Vivian thought she owned had begun collapsing one confession at a time.
