Chapter 3 — The House Remembers

After the police left with Vivian and Marcus, the mansion became strangely quiet.
It felt different.
As if the walls themselves had been holding their breath.
I helped Dad into the library.
The shelves still carried my mother's favorite novels.
Her piano remained untouched.
Even the pressed rose she had left inside an old journal was exactly where she'd hidden it years ago.
Dad smiled weakly.
"She always believed you'd come home."
I swallowed hard.
"I should have come sooner."
He shook his head.
"They isolated me."
"They intercepted letters."
"They blocked phone calls."
"I thought you had abandoned me."
The words cut deeper than anything Vivian had ever said.
I knelt beside him.
"I never stopped looking for you."
He reached into the desk drawer and removed a small brass key.
"I've been waiting to give this back."
It opened a hidden compartment beneath the fireplace.
Inside rested my mother's original trust documents.
Family photographs.
A handwritten letter.
And the original ownership agreement proving that every share Vivian claimed had always been protected for me and my father.
My mother had anticipated betrayal years before she died.
She simply never imagined it would come from inside our own family.
Dad wiped away a tear.
"Your mother always planned three moves ahead."
May you like
I smiled.
"So did her daughter."
