Chapter 1 — The Truth Emily Could No Longer Hide

The footsteps stopped outside the nursery.

For one endless second, no one breathed.

Emily's eyes widened.

"Don't tell her I'm talking," she whispered.

The doorknob turned.

Victoria stepped inside wearing the same cream-colored dress she'd worn to lunch, a half-empty wineglass still balanced effortlessly between her fingers.

She smiled when she saw me.

"You're home early."

I didn't answer.

I simply stared at her.

Then I looked at Emily.

Then back at the rope cutting into Emily's wrists.

Victoria followed my gaze as though she had just noticed the restraints herself.

"Oh," she sighed casually. "That."

"Untie her."

She shrugged.

"She's dramatic."

"I said untie her."

The smile disappeared.

"I was disciplining an employee."

"You tied her to a bed."

"So she wouldn't abandon our children."

I walked toward her slowly.

"Our children?" I asked.

"You told a mother her dying son didn't matter."

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"People like her always have some tragic story."

Emily suddenly spoke.

"Sir..."

Her voice trembled.

"There's something else."

Victoria's expression changed instantly.

"Emily."

It wasn't a warning.

It was a threat.

Emily closed her eyes.

"I have to tell him."

"TELL ME WHAT?"

Tears rolled down her face.

"The hospital called four hours ago."

My stomach tightened.

"They didn't just say my son was dying."

She swallowed painfully.

"They said someone had already paid every medical bill."

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with Victoria?"

Emily looked directly at me.

"Because Mrs. Cole canceled the payment."

The room became silent.

I stared at my wife.

Victoria laughed once.

"She doesn't even know what she's talking about."

Emily shook her head desperately.

"They showed me the paperwork."

"They said someone from your family office personally called and withdrew authorization."

I felt something inside me crack.

I knew only two people had access to that account.

Me...

...and Victoria.

"So my son could never receive the surgery."

Victoria crossed her arms.

"It was company money."

"It wasn't your decision."

"It became my decision."

Emily's voice broke.

"He may already be dead."

No one spoke.

Then I quietly reached into my pocket.

I pressed one button on my phone.

Every word inside the nursery began recording.

Because for the first time in our marriage...

I realized I no longer knew the woman standing in front of me.
