Chapter 4 — A Different Kind of Family

Six months later, the mansion felt strangely peaceful.

The divorce was finalized.

Victoria accepted a plea agreement that included prison time, financial restitution, and a permanent restraining order protecting Emily, her son, and the twins.

The stolen money was recovered through court proceedings and returned to the trusts and charities she had emptied.

Emily never wanted praise.

She only wanted to rebuild her life.

Her little boy slowly regained his strength after months of treatment.

The twins laughed every time he visited.

Watching the three children crawl across the living room together made the enormous house finally feel like a home.

One afternoon, while the twins napped upstairs, Emily handed me an envelope.

Inside was a letter.

"I found this in the nursery," she said.

It was written in my own handwriting.

A note I'd left months earlier before leaving on another business trip.

"Take good care of our babies. I trust you completely."

Emily smiled through tears.

"You kept your promise."

I looked toward the nursery where my children slept peacefully.

"No," I answered quietly.

"You kept yours."

Some people become family through blood.

Others become family through sacrifice.

The court records would forever remember Victoria Cole as the woman who nearly destroyed her own home.

But my twins would remember something entirely different.

The gentle woman who stayed tied to a bed for hours...

Bleeding, exhausted, terrified...

Yet never once stopped protecting two children who weren't even her own.

Sometimes the strongest heroes never wear uniforms.

Sometimes they simply refuse to let go of the children in their arms.
