Chapter 1: The Weight of Guilt

The heavy thud of Ethan’s leather briefcase hitting the floor did nothing to break the heavy silence of the room. He stood frozen at the doorway, his eyes darting from his mother and mother-in-law sitting anxiously on the sofa, to the woven wicker basket on the bed, and finally, to Clara.

Clara’s beautiful face was unrecognizable. Dark, swollen purple and yellow bruises ringed her eyes and marred her pale skin. Yet, as she looked at him, a fragile, tearful smile broke through her pain.

"Our son is born," she whispered, her voice a raspy breath.

Ethan fell to his knees beside the bed, burying his face in the white sheets, his shoulders shaking violently. "I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry, Clara. I shouldn't have left you alone."

Just twenty-four hours ago, Ethan had been lured across the state lines under the pretense of a crucial business emergency orchestrated by his former partner, Thomas Gable. It was a trap. While Ethan was stranded on a deserted highway with sabotaged tires, Thomas had sent his enforcers to Ethan’s home to retrieve a hidden ledger containing evidence of a multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme.

Clara had been home alone when they broke in. Pregnant and terrified, she didn’t run. She barricaded herself in the nursery, fighting back with every ounce of strength she had to protect their unborn child. She took brutal blows, but she held the door until the two grandmothers arrived unexpectedly, scaring the intruders away. The stress had induced labor, forcing Clara to give birth right there in the safety of their home, aided by her terrified but quick-thinking family.

Clara weakly reached out her bruised arm, her fingers brushing against Ethan’s hair. "He's safe, Ethan. Look at him. You didn't fail us. But we can't let Thomas win."
