The arrest of Thomas Gable was swift and public. Armed with the financial ledger, the direct audio recording linking him to the assault, and the testimonies of the family, federal authorities intercepted Thomas at a private airfield just as he was preparing to flee the country.
The courtroom trial a few months later was short. Confronted with airtight evidence of both corporate fraud and orchestrated violence against a pregnant woman, the jury took less than two hours to return a verdict. Thomas Gable was sentenced to twenty-five years in a maximum-security penitentiary.
On a warm Sunday afternoon, peace finally returned to Ethan and Clara’s home. The grandmothers were in the kitchen, laughing as they prepared dinner.
In the backyard, the wicker basket that had once sat on a tense, blood-stained bed was now placed gently on the lush green grass. Little Leo lay inside, sleeping peacefully under the dappled shade of an oak tree.
Ethan walked up behind Clara, wrapping his arms around her waist. Her skin was flawless again, the bruises entirely gone. She leaned back against his chest, watching their son breathe.
