Chapter 2 - WHAT THE STAFF KNEW

Rosa stood at the edge of the foyer with Luis and Maribel behind her. All three wore their regular uniforms, though they were supposed to be attending the safety seminar across town.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You lied to me,” she said to Rosa.

“No,” I replied. “I changed the schedule.”

Daniel looked from one face to another. “Why is everyone here?”

Rosa clasped her hands. She had managed our home for fourteen years. She had helped raise Daniel after his father died. I had never seen her afraid to speak inside Whitmore House.

Until Vanessa.

“Mr. Daniel,” she said, “we came back because Mrs. Whitmore asked us to be witnesses.”

Vanessa grabbed Daniel’s arm. “This is insane. Your mother set me up because she never wanted us together.”

I ignored her and pressed play on the recorder.

Her voice filled the foyer.

Carry those boxes.

People like you should be grateful people like me let you indoors.

Get on your knees and clean it with your hands.

Daniel’s jaw tightened with each sentence.

Then came the splash, Vanessa’s laugh, and her lie that I had threatened her.

He looked at her. “Tell me that isn’t your voice.”

“It is, but you don’t understand the context.”

“What context makes that okay?”

“She was rude to me!”

“I said I couldn’t lift six garment boxes because of my back,” I answered. “You called me lazy.”

Vanessa turned on me. “You were pretending.”

“I was pretending to be poor. I was not pretending to be human.”

Luis stepped forward. “Sir, she slapped a tray out of my hands last Tuesday because the sparkling water was not cold enough.”

Maribel swallowed. “She threatened to have my work papers investigated if I told anyone she brought strangers into the house.”

Daniel stared at Vanessa. “What strangers?”

“No one,” she said quickly.

Rosa removed her phone from her apron. “I saved the security times. Three men came through the service entrance on nights Mr. Daniel was traveling.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

It was not embarrassment now.

It was calculation.

Daniel took a step away from her. “Who were they?”

“Wedding vendors,” she said.

“At midnight?”

“They work late.”

Rosa opened a video. The screen showed Vanessa leading a broad-shouldered man toward Daniel’s private office. He carried a black case.

Daniel leaned closer.

“That door requires my fingerprint.”

Vanessa said nothing.

The front bell rang.

Nobody moved.

It rang again, followed by three hard knocks.

Then a man shouted through the door.

“Vanessa Cole! We know you’re inside. You owe us two hundred thousand dollars.”

Daniel looked at his fiancée.

May you like

She whispered, “Do not open that door.”
