Chapter 5 - THE MAN IN THE BASEMENT

Daniel hit the wall but stayed on his feet.

Grant chased the intruder through the laundry corridor. I heard a crash, a shout, then the heavy slam of the service door.

“Stay here,” Daniel told me.

“I own the house,” I replied. “You stay with me.”

We reached the back drive in time to see Grant pinning a man against a parked delivery van. The stranger wore a maintenance jacket and the same snake-shaped ring from the photograph.

Marcus Vale.

Vanessa appeared behind us.

“Marcus,” she breathed.

He laughed without humor. “You really thought you could leave me holding the debt?”

Daniel stepped forward. “You broke into my home.”

Marcus glanced at Vanessa. “She gave me the code.”

“That’s a lie,” Vanessa said.

Grant removed a small flash drive from Marcus’s pocket. “He had this.”

Marcus stopped smiling.

Vanessa moved faster than anyone expected. She grabbed a garden tool from the wall rack and swung it toward Grant’s hand. Daniel caught the handle before it connected.

“Enough!” he shouted.

For one second, they stood locked together—Daniel holding the tool, Vanessa pulling against him, fury twisting her face.

Then she released it.

“You’re choosing servants and criminals over me,” she said.

“No,” Daniel replied. “I’m choosing facts.”

Police arrived within minutes. Officers separated Marcus and Vanessa while firefighters checked the archive room. No one had been injured, and the damage was limited to the trash bin and several documents.

Detective Lena Brooks questioned us in the library.

Marcus claimed Vanessa had promised him access to Whitmore money after the wedding. Vanessa claimed Marcus had stalked and manipulated her. Each accused the other of forging Daniel’s signature.

Detective Brooks placed the flash drive in an evidence bag.

“We’ll need a warrant before we examine this fully,” she said. “But Mr. Vale told officers it contains financial records and video.”

“What kind of video?” Daniel asked.

The detective looked at Vanessa.

“Video from the Atlanta warehouse fire.”

Vanessa’s hands tightened around her chair.

I watched her carefully. “You said the fire was an accident.”

“It was.”

Marcus laughed from the doorway as an officer led him past.

“Ask her why the alarm wires were cut.”

Vanessa stood. “He is lying!”

Detective Brooks told her to sit.

Daniel looked sick. “Did you start that fire?”

“No.”

“Did you cut the alarms?”

“No!”

The detective’s phone rang. She listened for a few seconds, then looked at me.

“Mrs. Whitmore, your bank’s fraud department has frozen three foundation accounts.”

My chest went cold.

“Why?”

“They received transfer instructions carrying your authorization.”

“I authorized nothing.”

Detective Brooks turned toward Vanessa.

“The destination account belongs to a company created eleven days ago.”

She paused.
