Chapter 1: Lock Every Door

Chapter 1: Lock Every Door

The ballroom did not erupt into panic.

It became something far more dangerous.

Silent.

Three hundred of New York's wealthiest and most influential guests stood frozen beneath twelve crystal chandeliers as rain battered the towering windows of the Moretti mansion. No one dared whisper. No one dared move.

Because Alessandro Moretti had spoken.

"Lock the doors."

The order was delivered in the same calm tone another man might use to ask for coffee.

Yet within two seconds, the mansion transformed into a fortress.

More than twenty security officers in tailored black suits stepped from the edges of the ballroom as if they had appeared from the walls themselves. Tiny earpieces flashed beneath neatly trimmed hair.

"Seal every entrance."

"North gate secure."

"East terrace locked."

"No one leaves."

Massive oak doors swung shut with heavy metallic clicks.

Electronic bolts engaged.

Outside, headlights from black SUVs illuminated the rain-soaked driveway as additional guards hurried toward every exit.

The orchestra quietly lowered their instruments.

The violinist still held his bow in midair, too frightened to breathe.

Emma tightened her tiny fingers around my hand.

"Mama..."

Her fever had flushed her cheeks a soft pink.

"I don't like this."

Neither did I.

Every instinct screamed at me to pick her up and run.

But there was nowhere to run.

Not anymore.

Vanessa Cole finally found her voice.

"This has gone far enough."

Her smile returned, though it no longer reached her eyes.

"Alessandro, you're frightening our guests."

He didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward his chief of security.

"Mr. Russo."

A broad-shouldered man in his fifties stepped forward immediately.

"Sir."

"No phones leave this room."

Several guests instinctively slipped expensive smartphones into designer handbags.

Too late.

Security personnel moved politely but firmly through the ballroom.

"Please place your devices on the tables."

"This is outrageous!" one senator protested.

"I have confidential—"

"You'll have them returned shortly."

The guard never raised his voice.

He simply waited.

The senator obeyed.

One by one...

Hundreds of phones covered the white linen tables.

No photographs.

No calls.

No warnings.

No one outside the mansion would know what happened next.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Really?"

She folded her arms.

"You're treating your own engagement celebration like a criminal investigation because of a sick child?"

Emma buried her face against my skirt.

I knelt beside her.

"It's okay."

She shook her head.

"No..."

Her tiny voice trembled.

"The pretty lady is mad."

I kissed her forehead.

She was burning.

The fever had climbed again.

God...

What had I done?

Alessandro slowly approached us.

Not Vanessa.

Us.

He stopped several feet away, careful not to intimidate Emma.

"What is your name?"

She peeked at him.

"You know."

A few surprised smiles appeared among the guests despite the tension.

"You call me Emma."

For the first time that evening...

A faint expression crossed Alessandro's face.

Not amusement.

Recognition.

"You're right."

His voice remained gentle.

"I do."

Emma nodded seriously.

"You ate my cookie."

Several executives exchanged confused glances.

Alessandro answered with complete sincerity.

"It was very good."

"I know."

She looked proud.

"It had chocolate."

A few people quietly laughed.

Vanessa did not.

Her jaw tightened.

"This is absurd."

She walked toward Alessandro and slipped an arm around his.

"Sweetheart, the poor little girl has a fever."

She looked directly at me.

"You've filled her head with stories."

"I never—"

"I wasn't speaking to you."

Her voice became sharp enough to cut glass.

"The staff should remember their place."

Before I could answer...

Alessandro gently removed Vanessa's hand from his arm.

The gesture was so small...

So effortless...

Yet everyone noticed.

Vanessa blinked.

"You... moved my hand."

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because I asked you to wait."

The ballroom felt colder.

"And you continued talking."

A muscle twitched beneath Vanessa's left eye.

"You can't seriously believe this maid."

"I haven't decided what I believe."

He turned toward me.

"What is your name?"

I swallowed.

"Emily Carter."

"How long have you worked here?"

"Three years, sir."

"Have you ever been disciplined?"

Mr. Russo answered before I could.

"Never."

Everyone turned.

Russo continued calmly.

"Perfect attendance."

"Never accused of theft."

"Never violated confidentiality."

"Employee evaluations consistently exceptional."

I stared at him.

He knew all that?

Alessandro nodded once.

"I thought so."

Vanessa quickly laughed.

"Of course her record is clean."

"She's been planning this."

Several guests murmured uncertainly.

A billionaire hedge fund manager whispered,

"If she's lying, she's finished."

Another replied,

"If she's telling the truth..."

Neither finished the sentence.

No one wanted to imagine the consequences.

Alessandro looked toward the ballroom balcony.

"Marco."

A younger security officer appeared.

"Sir."

"Bring Miss Cole's luggage."

Vanessa's face lost color.

"My luggage?"

"Everything currently inside your suite."

She smiled again.

Too quickly.

"Why?"

"So we don't waste time."

"You have no right—"

"This is my home."

His words landed like stones.

"I have every right."

The room fell silent again.

Marco disappeared upstairs with four officers.

Vanessa's breathing subtly changed.

Only someone watching carefully would notice.

I noticed.

So did Alessandro.

He noticed everything.

Five endless minutes passed.

No one spoke.

Rain drummed against the windows.

Emma leaned against me, exhausted.

I rubbed her back while silently praying she wouldn't faint.

Then—

Footsteps.

The security team returned.

Not carrying one suitcase.

Five.

Designer luggage rolled across polished marble.

Louis Vuitton.

Rimowa.

Hermès.

Marco stopped.

"Everything from Miss Cole's dressing room."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"There."

She smiled triumphantly.

"Happy now?"

Alessandro ignored her.

He addressed Marco.

"The closet."

"Completely searched."

"And?"

Marco hesitated.

Everyone noticed.

"What did you find?"

"Nothing unusual, sir."

Vanessa laughed loudly.

"There."

She spread both hands toward the crowd.

"The maid lied."

Several relieved guests began murmuring.

"I knew it."

"Children imagine things."

"Poor Vanessa."

Heat rushed into my face.

Had I imagined the box?

No.

Impossible.

I remembered lifting winter coats.

Moving shoe boxes.

Seeing white cardboard decorated with tiny blue flowers.

I remembered placing it back exactly where I'd found it.

Had she moved it?

Of course she had.

Six weeks.

She'd had six weeks.

Vanessa looked directly at me.

Triumph gleamed in her eyes.

"You've destroyed your own future."

She turned dramatically toward Alessandro.

"I won't press charges."

Gasps spread through the ballroom.

"She's a widow."

Her voice dripped false compassion.

"She's raising a child."

"I pity her."

She looked at me as if offering mercy.

"But she and her daughter must leave this house tonight."

Emma started crying.

Not loudly.

Just frightened little tears.

"I'm sorry, Mama..."

My heart shattered.

I knelt and hugged her tightly.

"You did nothing wrong."

"But everybody's angry."

"No."

I kissed her curls.

"They're angry because grown-ups forget children tell the truth."

A heavy silence followed.

Then...

Alessandro asked a question so unexpected that everyone looked confused.

"What kind of flowers?"

I blinked.

"Sir?"

"The box."

He looked at Emma.

"What flowers were on it?"

Emma sniffled.

"The tiny blue ones."

She scrunched her little face while thinking.

"Like..."

She searched for the words.

"...forget-me-nots."

Every person in the ballroom stared at the child.

Alessandro slowly turned toward Marco.

"What flowers were printed on Miss Cole's wallpaper?"

Marco frowned.

"There weren't any."

"No."

"What about the gift boxes?"

Marco shook his head.

"Solid black."

"Shoe boxes?"

"White."

"No flowers."

Alessandro looked back at Emma.

"What color was the pillow?"

"Skin color."

She answered instantly.

"But squishy."

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

Almost imperceptible.

But enough.

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

He spoke quietly.

"So."

He faced Marco once more.

"You searched the closet."

"Yes, sir."

"Did you search the walls?"

Marco froze.

"The..."

"The walls."

Silence.

Alessandro continued.

"Miss Cole had the dressing room remodeled last month."

He looked toward the mansion's architect standing among the guests.

"Mr. Harrington."

A gray-haired man nervously stepped forward.

"Yes... Mr. Moretti?"

"You supervised the renovation."

"I did."

"Tell everyone."

The architect swallowed.

"There is..."

He hesitated.

"A concealed storage compartment."

The ballroom exploded into whispers.

Vanessa's face turned completely white.

"A decorative panel behind the rear wardrobe."

The architect's voice shook.

"It opens into a hidden storage cavity built between the walls."

Alessandro never looked away from Vanessa.

"You searched the closet."

His voice was almost gentle.

"But not..."

He paused.

"...the secret compartment."

Vanessa suddenly stepped backward.

Only one step.

But it was enough.

Alessandro saw it.

So did every security officer.

His expression hardened for the first time that night.

"Mr. Russo."

"Sir."

"Open the wall."

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"No."

Every eye turned toward her.

She realized her mistake instantly.

Too late.

"No?"

Alessandro asked quietly.

She forced a smile.

"I mean..."

"It's private."

His face became unreadable.

"It stopped being private..."

"...the moment my future child became part of the conversation."

Without another word...

Four security officers headed upstairs.

Vanessa stood perfectly still beneath the crystal chandeliers.

For the first time since announcing her pregnancy...

The beautiful future Mrs. Moretti looked genuinely afraid.

May you like

And somewhere above the silent ballroom...

A hidden wall was about to be opened.
