Chapter 13: Five Minutes to Burn

Chapter 13: Five Minutes to Burn

The countdown above the altar turned red.

04:51

Smoke spread through the chapel floor vents.

At first, it came in thin gray streams.

Then the streams thickened.

Emma coughed behind me.

I dropped to my knees and pulled the wet edge of my coat over her mouth.

“Breathe through this.”

Her frightened eyes searched mine.

“Are we going to die?”

“No.”

I answered too quickly.

Too firmly.

The lie was necessary.

Across the chapel, Russo’s team pulled at the upper balcony doors.

Locked.

Alessandro struck the main entrance with his shoulder.

It did not move.

Victor struggled against the restraints around his wrists.

Vanessa clutched the silver archive case against her chest.

And Isabella stood beside the altar, perfectly calm.

The woman had trapped herself with us.

That made no sense.

Unless she believed she had another way out.

I looked at the marble floor beneath her.

A narrow black line curved around the altar platform.

A seam.

“Alessandro!”

I pointed.

“There’s a door under her.”

Isabella’s eyes moved toward me.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Alessandro ran.

Two guards raised their weapons.

Commissioner Vance stepped between them.

“Put them down.”

Neither obeyed.

Vance moved closer.

“You know what happens if Isabella escapes.”

One guard glanced toward the smoke.

The other looked at the countdown.

04:32

Vance continued.

“She will blame you.”

“She will say you failed.”

“She will leave you here and recruit replacements.”

The first guard’s weapon lowered slightly.

Isabella’s voice sharpened.

“Do not listen to him.”

The second guard looked toward her.

“Is there an exit?”

Silence.

That was the answer.

The guard lowered his weapon.

The first followed.

Isabella’s face hardened.

“You were sworn to me.”

“No,” Vance said.

“They were frightened of you.”

“There is a difference.”

Alessandro reached the altar.

Isabella pressed another switch beneath her sleeve.

A section of black marble slid open.

She stepped backward onto a descending platform.

Alessandro lunged.

His hand caught her wrist.

For one instant, grandmother and grandson remained connected over the opening.

Then Isabella pulled a small blade from her sleeve.

She cut across his hand.

Alessandro released her.

The platform began lowering.

“Stop her!” Vanessa shouted.

Victor threw his body sideways.

The chair beneath him crashed into Isabella’s escape mechanism.

One wooden leg wedged between the moving platform and the marble edge.

The machinery screamed.

The platform stopped halfway.

Isabella lost her balance and struck the stone wall.

The blade fell from her hand.

Alessandro reached down, grabbed the back of her coat, and dragged her onto the chapel floor.

The hidden platform remained jammed open.

Below it, a metal ladder descended into darkness.

Fresh air rose from the shaft.

“Our exit,” Russo said.

The countdown continued.

04:08

Russo shouted to his officers.

“Move the child first.”

The rescued decoy girl was carried down from the balcony toward the altar.

But the balcony staircase had begun sealing behind a steel partition.

Vanessa slammed both hands against it.

“Russo!”

He examined the wall.

“No release.”

The upper team was trapped on the wrong side of the chapel.

Smoke thickened around them.

Emma coughed again.

I looked toward the hidden shaft.

It was narrow.

One person at a time.

Even if everyone reached it, four minutes might not be enough.

Vance pulled Isabella to her feet.

“Turn off the fire system.”

She smiled despite the blood at the corner of her mouth.

“There is no cancellation.”

“You built it.”

“I built certainty.”

Alessandro pressed his injured hand against his shirt.

“You planned to escape alone.”

“Naturally.”

“And let your own guards burn?”

“Sacrifice preserves order.”

The two guards who had lowered their weapons stared at her.

Whatever loyalty remained in them disappeared.

One moved toward the altar control panel.

“What starts the fire?”

Isabella said nothing.

The guard searched beneath the marble surface.

Vance turned toward Victor.

“You know the system.”

Victor looked toward the vents.

“Old chemical ignition.”

“Fuel lines beneath the archives.”

“Once the timer ends, the lower floors burn first.”

“How long until the chapel collapses?”

“Minutes.”

Russo shouted from the balcony.

“We need that partition open.”

Marco’s voice crackled through our earpieces.

“I can access some of the estate systems.”

Alessandro looked up.

“Can you stop the countdown?”

“No.”

“Open the balcony.”

“I’m trying.”

The timer reached—

03:41

I held Emma close and forced myself to think.

Daniel’s voice returned to me.

Fear makes people predictable.

Everyone was staring at the timer.

Everyone except Isabella.

She kept glancing toward the stained-glass window.

Not the hidden shaft.

The window.

I followed her gaze.

The image showed the crowned child beneath the silver wolf.

One colored glass panel near the crown was darker than the others.

And there was no steel shutter behind it.

“Russo,” I said.

“The window.”

He looked toward it.

“Reinforced.”

“Not all of it.”

I pointed toward the crown.

“Isabella keeps looking there.”

He understood.

The trapped officers on the balcony moved immediately.

One seized a heavy brass candle stand.

He struck the dark panel.

The first blow cracked the glass.

The second created a small opening.

Cold night air rushed inside.

The smoke shifted toward it.

Isabella’s calm vanished.

“No.”

Vanessa looked down at her.

“That is your emergency exit.”

The guard struck again.

Glass shattered outward.

Behind it was not open air.

A narrow maintenance passage had been built inside the wall.

Large enough to crawl through.

Russo smiled grimly.

“You always keep a second exit.”

The balcony team began moving the rescued child into the passage.

Marco spoke through the radio.

“That route leads to the north bell tower.”

“Can they get outside?”

“Yes.”

“But the tower door is electronically locked.”

“Open it.”

“I’m working on it.”

The timer continued.

03:07

Russo sent his officers first.

Vanessa remained on the balcony with the archive case.

“You go,” he told her.

“No.”

“You are carrying the evidence.”

“And you are carrying the gun.”

“This is not a debate.”

Vanessa looked toward me.

Then toward Emma.

“Take the case.”

She threw it from the balcony.

Alessandro caught it against his chest.

Vanessa climbed into the maintenance passage.

Russo followed last.

The partition sealed completely behind him.

They disappeared into the wall.

Now only seven of us remained in the chapel.

Emma.

Me.

Alessandro.

Vance.

Victor.

Isabella.

And one former Black Wolf guard.

The second guard had already entered the hidden shaft.

The remaining man looked toward us.

“Go.”

He held the platform mechanism open with both hands.

The damaged machinery strained against him.

“If I release this, the opening closes.”

Alessandro moved toward him.

“We can wedge it.”

“No time.”

The man’s face was young.

Younger than I had noticed before.

“What is your name?” I asked.

“Thomas.”

“Come with us, Thomas.”

He shook his head.

“I helped bring children here.”

His arms trembled against the mechanism.

“I told myself they were safe.”

“I told myself the Society was protecting them.”

The timer showed—

02:48

“This is not how you make it right,” I said.

“No.”

He looked toward Emma.

“But it may be where I start.”

Victor dragged his broken chair closer to the shaft.

“Someone cut me loose.”

Vance picked up Isabella’s fallen blade and sliced through the restraints.

Victor stood slowly.

His legs nearly failed beneath him.

Alessandro took Emma from my arms.

“You first.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“She will not go before me.”

“She needs someone below to catch her.”

Vance entered the shaft.

“I will.”

I looked at him.

He held out his arms from the ladder.

“I owe Daniel more than I can repay.”

I did not trust him.

But trust was no longer a luxury.

I kissed Emma’s forehead.

“Go with him.”

She clung to my neck.

“No.”

“I’ll be right behind you.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Alessandro lowered her carefully into Vance’s arms.

They began descending.

Emma looked up at me until darkness swallowed her face.

Victor went next.

Then Isabella moved toward the opening.

Alessandro blocked her.

“You go last.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“If the platform fails—”

“You go last.”

The timer reached—

02:11

I entered the shaft.

The ladder was cold and wet.

Smoke followed us downward.

Below, Vance carried Emma through a narrow tunnel.

Victor limped behind him.

I descended quickly.

Above me, Alessandro forced Isabella onto the ladder.

He followed.

Thomas remained in the chapel, holding the mechanism open.

“Come now!” Alessandro shouted.

Thomas looked down through the opening.

Then he looked toward the timer.

01:54

The machinery shifted.

The platform crushed one of his hands against the marble edge.

He cried out but did not release it.

“Thomas!” I screamed.

“Go!”

The chapel vents roared.

Orange light appeared beneath the floor.

The chemical fuel had begun igniting early.

Fire raced along the outer walls.

Thomas pushed harder.

The gap widened for one final second.

Alessandro dropped through.

The mechanism snapped shut above him.

Thomas disappeared behind black marble.

A deep explosion shook the shaft.

Emma screamed below.

Dust and stone fell around us.

The ladder tore away from the upper wall.

Alessandro jumped the remaining distance and struck the tunnel floor.

I dropped beside him.

“Are you hurt?”

He pushed himself upright.

“No.”

Another explosion thundered overhead.

The tunnel ceiling cracked.

“Move!” Victor shouted.

We ran.

Vance carried Emma ahead.

Isabella struggled between Alessandro and me.

The tunnel sloped downward toward the underground railway platform shown on Marco’s blueprint.

Behind us, fire roared through Blackstone House.

Ancient stone could not burn.

But everything hidden inside it could.

Records.

Money.

Bodies.

Proof.

The empire was trying to destroy its own memory.

The tunnel opened into a vast underground station.

A black train waited on the tracks.

Its engine was already running.

Three carriages.

Dark windows.

No driver visible.

Isabella smiled.

“At last.”

Alessandro grabbed her arm.

“What is this?”

“My final route.”

“You expected to reach it alone.”

“Of course.”

Vance set Emma down.

She ran to me.

I lifted her into my arms.

“Where does the train go?” I asked.

Isabella looked toward the tunnel ahead.

“A private terminal beneath Manhattan.”

Victor laughed.

“She means the old Moretti bank.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“The dormant trusts.”

“Not dormant,” Isabella replied.

“Protected.”

The station speakers activated.

Marco’s voice came through.

“Do not board that train.”

“Why?” Alessandro asked.

“I found the rail controls.”

“The tunnel ends beneath the river.”

Vance looked toward the tracks.

“And?”

Marco hesitated.

“The last section is flooded.”

Isabella’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But we all saw it.

Victor smiled.

“She didn’t know.”

“You are lying,” Isabella said.

Marco continued.

“The tunnel collapsed twelve years ago.”

“The train cannot reach Manhattan.”

“It can only travel three miles before the tracks end.”

Alessandro looked toward the operating engine.

“Then why is it running?”

A metallic sound came from behind us.

The station doors locked.

Red lights activated along the walls.

A message appeared above the platform.

EVACUATION TRAIN DEPARTING

00:45

Isabella stared at the display.

“This is not my command.”

Victor looked toward her.

“Someone took control of your system.”

Marco spoke urgently.

“It isn’t me.”

The carriage doors opened automatically.

Inside, lights flickered on.

Rows of empty seats appeared.

Except in the final carriage.

A man sat behind the glass.

Gray suit.

Gold wolf ring.

Richard Conway.

Alive.

He lifted one hand in greeting.

Victor stepped toward the train.

“That is impossible.”

Conway’s voice came through the station speakers.

“You have all spent the evening mistaking bodies for deaths.”

Vance stared at him.

“I saw you shot.”

“You saw what the Society wanted you to see.”

Alessandro’s face hardened.

“You staged the tunnel attack.”

“Yes.”

“You stole the succession file.”

“Yes.”

“You took Emma.”

“For a short time.”

Emma hid her face against my shoulder.

I held her tighter.

Conway looked toward Isabella.

“The Chairwoman built an organization based on controlled information.”

“So I gave her false information.”

Isabella’s eyes filled with hatred.

“You served me for thirty years.”

“I studied you for thirty years.”

The departure timer continued.

00:29

Conway lifted the original succession folder.

“You wanted Emily’s signature.”

“Victor wanted the trusts.”

“Alessandro wanted the truth.”

“But Daniel wanted something else.”

I stepped closer to the platform edge.

“What?”

“To make sure no Moretti controlled the money again.”

Conway opened the folder.

Inside was a single legal document.

He held it toward the glass.

The final page carried Daniel’s signature.

And another name.

Richard Conway.

Conway continued.

“Daniel created a dead-man transfer.”

“If the Society exposed Emma’s identity…”

“If Isabella attempted to activate the succession…”

“Every dormant trust would transfer automatically.”

“To whom?” Alessandro asked.

Conway looked directly at me.

“Not to a person.”

“To a foundation for the families harmed by the Moretti empire.”

Isabella lunged toward the train.

“No!”

The carriage doors began closing.

Conway smiled.

“The transfer completed eleven minutes ago.”

The doors sealed.

The train moved.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

Isabella ran beside it, striking the glass.

“Stop!”

Conway remained seated.

He placed the succession file on the table before him.

Then lit a match.

Flame touched the corner of the document.

Isabella screamed.

The train entered the tunnel.

The burning file disappeared into darkness with Conway.

The station shook again.

Blackstone House collapsed somewhere above us.

Stone crashed through the access tunnel.

The route behind us vanished.

The railway tunnel ahead led toward flooded tracks.

And the station doors remained locked.

Marco’s voice crackled through the speakers.

“I lost control.”

Water began flowing between the rails.

At first, only a thin stream.

Then more.

Victor looked into the dark tunnel.

“The fire ruptured the old river wall.”

The water climbed over the platform edge.

Emma whimpered.

I held her above it.

Alessandro searched the station walls.

“There must be another exit.”

Isabella laughed.

Not calmly.

Not elegantly.

The sound was broken.

“There isn’t.”

Vance looked at her.

“You built a station with one entrance?”

“I built it so no one could follow me.”

The water reached our ankles.

Then our knees.

The lights flickered.

Emma wrapped both arms around my neck.

“Mama, I’m cold.”

“I know.”

I looked around the sealed underground station.

The archive had burned.

The succession file was gone.

The hidden fortune no longer belonged to the Morettis.

Isabella’s empire had ended.

May you like

But if we could not escape the flooding platform—

Daniel’s victory would be buried with all of us.
