Chapter 16 - THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S FILE

Vaughn’s server contained thousands of confidential documents.

Some came from active criminal cases.

Others came from private phones seized without warrants.

David and Vaughn used the information to pressure witnesses and opposing attorneys.

My phone contained messages to Naomi from months before Christmas.

I had quietly asked Naomi what separation would involve.

I never scheduled a meeting.

But Vaughn saw the messages.

He told David I was preparing to leave.

That discovery accelerated the Christmas plan.

They intended to have me declared unstable before I could file for divorce.

Vaughn also found messages between me and my father.

They were brief.

Birthday wishes.

Photographs.

A few conversations about my mother.

The messages proved Jonathan Hale was my father.

Vaughn warned David not to involve him.

David answered.

SHE WILL NEVER CALL.

SHE IS TOO ASHAMED.

He had understood me perfectly.

He knew shame was the lock keeping me inside the marriage.

That knowledge hurt more than discovering he knew my father’s identity.

He had seen my fear.

Then he used it.

Federal agents arrested Vaughn at his office.

He announced that the case was an attack on local authority.

No one believed him after investigators released the reflection from Rachel’s video.

The image showed him standing several feet from me while I begged for help.

He did nothing.

The governor appointed an independent prosecutor named Evelyn Brooks.

Brooks had no relationship with my father.

She reviewed the entire case from the beginning.

At our first meeting, she said something I needed to hear.

“Your father’s position will not determine the outcome.”

“Good.”

“But it will be discussed by the defense every day.”

“I know.”

“They will say witnesses changed their stories because they fear him.”

“Did they?”

“Some may have.”

That was the difficult truth.

Power could reveal evidence.

It could also frighten people into convenient honesty.

Brooks refused to rely on sudden confessions unless physical evidence supported them.

Rachel’s recording.

Phone records.

Bank transfers.

Forged documents.

Hospital logs.

Those would carry the case.

Not my father’s name.

The trial date was set for October.

Clara would be eight months old.

My divorce hearing was scheduled sooner.

David demanded half of our assets and temporary visitation.

Naomi filed evidence of the attempted abduction.

The court denied visitation.

During the divorce hearing, David appeared by video from jail.

He stared at Clara on my lap.

For one moment, his expression softened.

Then he spoke.

“That child carries my name.”

I answered before Naomi could stop me.

“No.”

“She carries mine.”

Her legal name was Clara Hale Mercer.

After the divorce, I planned to remove the final word.
