Chapter 7 - THE SHERIFF’S CHRISTMAS FAVOR
The state attorney general opened an investigation into Sheriff Keller.
Federal agents seized communications between Keller and David.
The messages went back more than two years.
David had helped Keller avoid prosecution after a drunk-driving incident involving the sheriff’s son.
In exchange, Keller provided information about complaints made against David’s clients.
He also pressured officers to reduce charges for people connected to David’s law firm.
One message mentioned me.
SHE MAY CALL SOMEDAY.
TREAT IT AS DOMESTIC DRAMA.
The message was sent eight months before Christmas.
David had predicted I might eventually ask for help.
He prepared the sheriff to ignore me.
Another message appeared the morning of the dinner.
MOTHER WILL HANDLE HER.
KEEP YOUR PHONE ON.
I read the words twice.
“Mother will handle her.”
The push had not been a sudden argument.
David expected Sylvia to force me into obedience.
Perhaps he did not know exactly how far she would go.
But he knew enough to warn Keller.
My father did not read the messages with me.
He asked Agent Reed for summaries.
I understood why.
He was trying to remain my father without interfering as Chief Justice.
Any direct involvement could allow David to claim the investigation was political retaliation.
Jonathan Hale had spent his career avoiding even the appearance of improper influence.
Now his own daughter needed justice.
He could not personally deliver it.
He could only ensure no one blocked it.
“I will not contact the prosecutors,” he told me.
“I will not direct the investigators.”
“I know.”
“But I will remain beside you.”
That mattered more.
David’s law firm suspended him after Rachel’s recording became public.
He responded by releasing private photographs from our marriage.
One showed me crying in our bedroom.
Another showed a broken vase.
David claimed I had destroyed it during a violent episode.
The truth was that Sylvia had thrown it after I refused to lend her money.
David had photographed the damage before cleaning it.
He had been collecting images for years.
My attorney, Naomi Chen, examined every file.
“This is coercive control documented by the person committing it.”
“How does that help?”
“He believed these photographs would prove instability.”
“Instead, the timing may prove planning.”
Naomi discovered David had created a folder called CUSTODY.
It contained edited photographs, false medical reports, and statements signed by Sylvia’s friends.
One statement had been dated three months after the current date.
David was preparing future witnesses before events even happened.
Then investigators recovered a deleted audio file from my phone.
I did not recognize it.
The recording had activated automatically during an argument two weeks before Christmas.
David’s voice filled the room.
“Once the baby is born, you will not be necessary.”
I had forgotten he said it.
