Chapter 11 - The Price of a Marriage

The draft email changed the direction of the investigation.

David’s attorney called it meaningless.

A rough note.

A bad joke.

But investigators found attached spreadsheets.

My projected inheritance.

The value of Dad’s properties.

Estimated royalties from books.

Family trust distributions.

David had spent months calculating a future he did not own.

He had even prepared a postnuptial agreement.

I had never seen it.

Under its terms, almost everything I inherited during the marriage would have become marital property under complex transfers David planned to persuade me to sign.

Rachel looked disgusted.

“He was building a financial trap.”

“Would it have worked?”

“Only if you signed.”

I touched my stomach.

“He was waiting until after the baby.”

“That appears likely.”

Then came an even darker discovery.

David had searched for private psychiatric facilities.

Not for treatment.

For involuntary commitment procedures.

Rachel placed the records on the table.

“He was researching how long a spouse can be held after an emergency evaluation.”

I stared at the screen.

My skin went cold.

If Christmas had gone differently, David might have used my collapse as proof of instability.

He could have said pregnancy hormones caused a breakdown.

He could have told doctors I had injured myself.

He had already prepared documents describing me as irrational.

The realization was almost too large to absorb.

My marriage had not simply become abusive.

David had been planning the next stage.

Control the money.

Control the narrative.

Control the baby.

And if necessary, control me through a locked door.

Two weeks after Christmas, David’s firm placed him on administrative leave.

The statement was brief.

Professional.

Temporary pending review.

David responded by giving an interview outside his house.

“I am being targeted because of who my father-in-law is.”

He said the words with practiced outrage.

He portrayed himself as the ordinary attorney trapped beneath a powerful family.

For several hours, it worked.

Commentators argued.

Some believed him.

Then Claire Bennett released her Christmas recording through her attorney after investigators cleared the disclosure.

The public heard David’s own voice.

No ambulance.

The neighbors will talk.

I’ll tell everyone you’re unstable.

The narrative collapsed overnight.

But I did not celebrate.

Because Rachel called me at midnight.

“David left the state.”

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?”

“He missed a required interview.”

“Where did he go?”

“We don’t know.”

I looked down at my stomach.

May you like

Then toward the dark window.

Outside my father’s gate, a car that had been parked across the street suddenly turned on its headlights.
