Chapter 13 - A Mother Turns

Sylvia’s attorney arranged the meeting.
I was not allowed inside.
But Rachel later told me what Sylvia admitted.
David had been furious because I refused to sign financial documents three days before Christmas.
He told Sylvia I was becoming “defiant.”
He wanted his mother to pressure me publicly.
Embarrass me.
Make me feel dependent.
Remind me that I had no family.
Sylvia agreed.
That was why I cooked alone.
Why no chair was available.
Why she called me a servant.
The cruelty had been planned as theater.
The push, Sylvia insisted, happened because I reached for the chair after being told not to.
She claimed she never intended to injure me.
I did not care about the difference.
Rachel continued.
“Sylvia recorded a conversation with David afterward.”
“When?”
“The day after you were hospitalized.”
Sylvia had begun to panic.
She wanted David to take responsibility.
Instead, David told her to say I fell.
When Sylvia asked what would happen if Maria talked, David allegedly answered:
Then we make Maria look like a thief.
The recording was clear.
So was Sylvia’s voice asking whether the baby could die.
David’s response was worse.
If it does, Anna becomes easier to manage.
I stood up too quickly.
Rachel reached toward me.
“I’m fine.”
I was not fine.
I walked to the window.
For weeks, part of me had still searched for some explanation.
Maybe David had panicked.
Maybe his words on Christmas were selfish but not calculated.
Maybe there was a piece of the man I once loved hiding somewhere under everything he had done.
That recording erased the last illusion.
He had known I might lose our son.
And his first thought had been control.
Dad entered the room later.
He did not ask what Sylvia had said.
He could read it on my face.
“I loved him.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Dad sat beside me.
“Because people do not introduce themselves by showing the worst thing inside them.”
I leaned back.
“He fooled me.”
“For a while.”
Dad looked toward the baby clothes folded on the chair.
“But not forever.”
Three days later, the state disciplinary board suspended David’s law license pending formal proceedings.
That afternoon, prosecutors announced additional charges related to witness intimidation and evidence manipulation.
David’s career had not ended because my father made a phone call.
May you like
It was ending because David had finally created a record he could not rewrite.
And then he requested to speak to me alone.
