Chapter 1: The Man Santiago Never Expected

For one long, impossible second, no one moved.

The grandfather clock in the foyer ticked softly beneath the glittering chandelier.

Santiago stared at the stranger standing inside his home.

Then recognition slowly crept across his face.

He had seen that face before.

Not in person.

On magazine covers.

At international business conferences.

On the front page of financial newspapers.

His confidence vanished.

"...Ricardo Salazar?"

My father didn't answer immediately.

His dark eyes moved past Santiago and landed on me.

He noticed the swelling beneath my left eye.

The fingerprints beginning to bloom across my wrist.

The tear stains on my face.

Then his gaze dropped to my eight-month pregnant belly.

His expression didn't change.

That frightened me more than if he had shouted.

Behind him stood two attorneys carrying leather briefcases and three security officers wearing discreet black suits.

One of the attorneys quietly placed a folder onto the marble entry table.

"Everything is being recorded," he said.

"The livestream has been archived in three separate locations."

Santiago's jaw tightened.

"I don't know what kind of game this is—"

"It isn't a game," my father interrupted.

"It's evidence."

Beatriz laughed nervously.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

She walked forward with practiced elegance, extending her hand.

"Mr. Salazar, I'm Beatriz Rivas. Santiago's mother."

My father didn't take her hand.

Instead, he asked one simple question.

"Did you tell your son not to leave visible bruises?"

Silence.

Beatriz slowly lowered her hand.

For the first time in years...

She looked afraid.

Santiago recovered quickly.

"This is my house."

"You can't just walk in here."

My father's attorney calmly produced a document.

"We entered under legal authorization after receiving credible evidence that the life of Mrs. Valeria Salazar was in immediate danger."

Santiago blinked.

"Salazar?"

He turned toward me.

"What did he call you?"

I looked directly into his eyes.

"My name isn't Valeria Mendoza."

"My full name is Valeria Salazar."

The room seemed to shrink around us.

Santiago actually laughed.

"No."

"No... that's impossible."

"You lied to me."

"I protected myself."

His face twisted with rage.

"You tricked me!"

"No," my father said quietly.

"You simply revealed who you really were."

One of the security officers stepped toward me.

"Mrs. Salazar?"

I nodded.

He gently helped me stand.

As I took my first step toward my father...

Santiago grabbed my arm.

"She's not leaving."

The security team's response was immediate.

Within seconds, Santiago found himself pinned against the wall.
