Chapter 3: The Birth of the Truth

Three weeks later...
Labor began unexpectedly.
My contractions started shortly before dawn.
My father drove beside the ambulance the entire way to the hospital.
Outside...
News helicopters circled overhead.
Inside...
Only one thing mattered.
My son.
After eleven exhausting hours...
I finally heard him cry.
The sweetest sound I had ever known.
The nurse smiled.
"It's a boy."
I held him against my chest.
Tiny fingers.
Dark hair.
Perfect heartbeat.
I whispered,
"Welcome home, Mateo."
My father stood quietly beside the hospital bed.
Tears rolled down his face.
He kissed my forehead.
"He'll never know fear."
"I promise."
Across the city...
Santiago sat alone inside a detention cell.
His attorney entered carrying fresh documents.
"The judge denied bail."
Santiago slammed the table.
"My wife belongs here!"
The attorney looked at him.
"She isn't your wife anymore."
"She filed for divorce."
"And..."
He hesitated.
"The court granted an emergency protection order."
"You may never contact her or your son again."
