Iranian Lawmaker Claims Ukraine Has Become a Party to the Middle East Conflict

An Iranian lawmaker has accused Ukraine of becoming a participant in the ongoing Middle East conflict by supporting Israel, warning that Tehran could consider Ukraine a legitimate target in response.

Ebrahim Azizi, a member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, made the remarks in a post on X on March 14. He argued that Ukraine’s alleged support in the area of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for Israel effectively places Kyiv on one side of the conflict.

“By providing drone support to Israel, Ukraine has become a party to the war,” Azizi wrote. “Under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, the entire territory of Ukraine could be considered a legitimate target for Iran.”

Article 51 of the UN Charter outlines the inherent right of self-defense for member states. It allows countries to use force to defend themselves if attacked or to assist another nation in self-defense, although such actions are meant to be temporary and subject to oversight by the United Nations.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, dismissed the Iranian lawmaker’s comments as provocative and said Kyiv was not intimidated by the threat.

Speaking to i24 News, Korniychuk said Ukraine is prepared to support its partners, including Israel, if necessary.

“Unfortunately, our relations with Iran are already quite complicated, partly because Iran has provided drones and military technology to Russia,” he said. “We are not concerned about threats coming from Iran and we are ready to assist our partners when needed.”

Azizi’s warning came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last week that 11 countries had approached Ukraine for assistance in countering Shahed-type drones, a type of loitering munition originally developed by Iran.

Tensions in the region escalated after Iran was reportedly struck by attacks carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28. Tehran later retaliated by launching missiles and drones at Israel as well as several targets across the Gulf region, including locations in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Among the reported targets were U.S. military bases, ports, airports, oil facilities, and even some high-rise buildings.

Air defense systems operated by the United States and Israel reportedly intercepted most of Iran’s ballistic missiles. However, large waves of inexpensive drones were able to strike several targets, including energy infrastructure.

Ukraine has significant experience dealing with such threats. Since the start of the war with Russia in 2022, Moscow has frequently used drones similar to the Shahed model to strike Ukrainian infrastructure.

President Zelenskyy said Kyiv is willing to share its experience in countering drone attacks, but only with countries that have supported Ukraine’s efforts to defend its independence and protect its people. He did not specify which nations would receive such assistance.

Meanwhile, Israel has largely tried to maintain a neutral stance regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine since the conflict began in February 2022. While Tel Aviv has provided humanitarian aid to Kyiv and supported several pro-Ukraine resolutions at the United Nations, it has generally refrained from supplying weapons to Ukraine.
