CHAPTER 1 — The Empire Begins to Collapse

CHAPTER 1 — The Empire Begins to Collapse

The black SUV cut silently through the empty streets, leaving Andrew's mansion behind like a fading nightmare.

Mariana never looked back.

She sat perfectly still in the rear seat, one hand resting on the leather armrest while the other gently touched the bruise forming across her cheek.

The sting reminded her of one thing.

Not the slap.

Not the humiliation.

The betrayal.

Across from her sat Victor Hale, the Escalante family's chief legal officer for nearly thirty years.

His silver hair was neatly combed, his expression calm, but his eyes burned with restrained anger.

"I'm sorry we were too late, Miss Escalante."

Mariana gave him a faint smile.

"You arrived exactly when I needed you."

Victor looked at the red mark on her face.

"Your father will not take this well."

"He doesn't have to."

Mariana looked out the window.

"I'll handle Andrew myself."

For several minutes, silence filled the vehicle.

Outside, the glittering skyline slowly appeared.

Tower after tower reflected against the night sky.

At the center stood the tallest building in the city.

Escalante Global Headquarters.

Andrew had always admired that building.

He often told reporters it was the symbol of true business power.

What he never knew...

The woman sleeping beside him every night was the daughter of the man who owned it.

Twenty years earlier...

Mariana had been born into unimaginable wealth.

The Escalante family controlled international shipping, renewable energy, luxury hotels, banking, technology investments, and private equity across four continents.

Old money.

Quiet money.

The kind of fortune that never appeared on celebrity magazines because it preferred influence over attention.

Her father, Alejandro Escalante, had only one child.

Mariana.

From the day she turned eighteen, every newspaper predicted she would inherit one of the largest private fortunes in the world.

Instead...

She disappeared.

At twenty-four, she rejected the luxurious lifestyle that surrounded her.

She wanted one thing.

To be loved for who she was.

Not for her last name.

Not for her family's fortune.

Not for the billions waiting for her.

So she left.

Using only her mother's maiden name...

She became Mariana Brooks.

No private jets.

No bodyguards.

No family connections.

She rented a small apartment.

Worked ordinary consulting jobs.

Built her own reputation.

That was where she met Andrew Collins.

Back then...

Andrew wasn't rich.

His technology company was weeks away from bankruptcy.

Employees were quitting.

Investors were demanding repayment.

Banks refused to extend another loan.

The media predicted his business would collapse before Christmas.

He looked exhausted.

Desperate.

Broken.

Mariana remembered their first conversation perfectly.

"I don't need sympathy," Andrew had told her.

"I need someone willing to tell me why everyone thinks I'm failing."

She had smiled.

"Because you've built a good product."

"But you're running the wrong company."

He laughed.

"You figured that out in one meeting?"

She nodded.

"And in another meeting..."

"I'll show you how to fix it."

She did.

Over the next eighteen months...

Mariana quietly rebuilt every part of the business.

She renegotiated supplier contracts.

She restructured debt.

She convinced investors to stay.

She redesigned marketing.

She expanded overseas.

Whenever Andrew succeeded...

Everyone praised his brilliance.

Whenever a miracle happened...

The board applauded his leadership.

No one noticed the quiet woman sitting beside him during every negotiation.

Mariana never corrected them.

She loved him.

His success made her happy.

When he proposed...

She said yes without hesitation.

Against her father's advice.

"You can marry him," Alejandro had said.

"But never tell him who you are."

Mariana frowned.

"You don't trust him?"

"I trust time."

Her father had looked out the window.

"Money doesn't change people."

"It reveals them."

Mariana thought he was being overly cautious.

She believed love was stronger than wealth.

For four years...

She defended Andrew every time her father questioned him.

"He works hard."

"He respects me."

"He would never care about our money."

Alejandro never argued.

He simply said the same sentence every Christmas.

"I hope you're right."

The SUV entered the underground parking garage beneath Escalante Global Headquarters.

The security gates opened before the vehicle even stopped.

More than twenty security officers stood waiting.

The moment Mariana stepped out...

Every one of them straightened.

"Good evening, Miss Escalante."

She acknowledged them with a small nod.

It had been almost five years since she'd last entered the building.

Nothing had changed.

Except her.

Victor walked beside her toward the private elevator.

"The emergency board has assembled."

"They're waiting on the sixty-second floor."

"The banking division already received your authorization."

"The international legal teams are online."

"And the financial transfer begins in twelve minutes."

Mariana stopped walking.

"Twelve?"

Victor nodded.

"We accelerated the timetable."

She smiled.

"Good."

Meanwhile...

Back at the Collins mansion...

Andrew poured himself a glass of thirty-year-old whiskey.

Brenda wrapped her arms around his neck.

"I can't believe she finally left."

Margaret laughed.

"She'll be back before sunrise."

Andrew smirked.

"She has nowhere else to go."

Brenda kissed his cheek.

"Maybe tomorrow we should change the locks."

Everyone laughed.

None of them noticed the family accountant standing quietly near the doorway.

His phone vibrated.

One notification.

Then another.

Then another.

His face slowly lost all color.

"Mr... Mr. Collins..."

Andrew frowned.

"What is it?"

"The corporate accounts..."

"What about them?"

"They've been temporarily frozen."

Andrew rolled his eyes.

"It's probably another banking verification."

The accountant swallowed.

"No..."

"It says..."

He looked at the screen again, unable to believe what he was reading.

"Authorization revoked."

Andrew stood.

"What?"

The accountant's hands began shaking.

"The chairman's executive privileges..."

"They're gone."

Silence.

Margaret frowned.

"That's impossible."

"The company belongs to Andrew."

The accountant looked terrified.

"I... I don't think it does."

Sixty-two floors above the city...

The boardroom doors opened.

Every executive stood immediately.

No one remained seated.

Men and women worth hundreds of millions lowered their heads respectfully.

"Welcome home, Miss Escalante."

Mariana entered without speaking.

The massive conference table displayed hundreds of legal documents.

Corporate ownership structures.

Trust agreements.

International holdings.

Bank authorizations.

Every secret she had hidden for years.

At the far end of the room sat her father.

Alejandro Escalante.

Eighty years old.

Still commanding the room without saying a word.

He slowly stood.

His eyes paused on the bruise across his daughter's face.

For several seconds...

Neither of them spoke.

Then Alejandro walked forward.

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

"Who touched my daughter?"

The room became deathly silent.

Mariana met his eyes.

"It was Andrew."

Alejandro nodded once.

No anger.

No shouting.

Only absolute certainty.

He turned toward the legal team.

"Begin."

One lawyer opened the first folder.

"Phase One has already been completed."

"The Collins Group has lost access to every operational account."

Another lawyer continued.

"Phase Two begins in seven minutes."

"Emergency shareholder voting rights will automatically transfer."

A third lawyer spoke.

"By sunrise..."

"The Collins family will no longer control a single company."

Mariana quietly took her seat at the head of the table.

For the first time in years...

She wasn't hiding.

She wasn't pretending.

She wasn't apologizing for her power.

She picked up the first document.

Signed her name.

One signature.

Then another.

Then another.

Every stroke of her pen erased another piece of Andrew's empire.

Thousands of miles away...

Servers updated.

Banks executed orders.

Law firms activated sealed agreements.

Investment funds shifted ownership.

And inside the Collins mansion...

The lights suddenly flickered.

Not because of a power failure.

Because an empire had just begun collapsing from the inside.

Andrew still had no idea...

May you like

The nightmare had only just begun.
