Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT CORINNE CAME BACK

Ethan moved Maisie again.
This time, not to a hotel.
A private residence owned by Rachel’s husband sat behind gated farmland thirty miles away.
Two security professionals remained on the property.
Police knew the location.
No one else did.
Or so Ethan believed.
For three days, nothing happened.
Maisie began sleeping normally.
She played with Leah in the garden.
Ethan worked remotely.
For brief moments, life almost felt ordinary.
Then Maisie woke at 2:13 a.m.
She touched Ethan’s arm.
“Daddy.”
He opened his eyes instantly.
“What?”
“I heard Mommy’s song.”
Ethan frowned.
“What song?”
“The music box.”
His body went cold.
Mara had owned a small silver music box.
It played a lullaby she used when Maisie was a baby.
The music box disappeared after Mara’s death.
Ethan sat up.
“Where did you hear it?”
“Outside.”
He reached for his phone.
The security monitor showed nothing unusual.
Two guards remained at their posts.
Then the image on one camera flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Black.
Ethan stood.
“Maisie, put your shoes on.”
She obeyed without arguing.
He called security.
No answer from the first guard.
The second answered.
“Mr. Bennett?”
“Camera three is down.”
“I see it.”
“Check on Michael.”
“I’m moving.”
Ethan heard static.
Then silence.
“Daniel?”
No answer.
Ethan’s heartbeat accelerated.
He called 911.
The dispatcher instructed him to stay inside a locked room.
Ethan moved Maisie into an interior bedroom.
Leah and Rachel joined them.
“What’s happening?”
Rachel whispered.
“Someone’s outside.”
Maisie clutched her rabbit.
Then the music began again.
Soft.
Delicate.
Mara’s lullaby.
Coming from the hallway.
Maisie’s face went white.
“Corinne.”
Ethan locked the bedroom door.
Leah covered her mouth.
The music stopped.
A woman’s voice came from the other side.
“Maisie?”
Ethan felt rage explode through him.
Corinne.
“Sweetheart?”
Maisie pressed herself against Ethan.
Corinne continued.
“Daddy is confused.”
Ethan said nothing.
“Open the door.”
Silence.
“I came to take you somewhere safe.”
Maisie shook her head violently.
Ethan held one finger to his lips.
Police were on the way.
Corinne tried the handle.
Locked.
Then she laughed softly.
“Ethan.”
He remained silent.
“I know you’re there.”
He looked at his phone.
The dispatcher was still connected.
“Corinne.”
His voice was controlled.
“Leave.”
“You stole my child.”
Maisie buried her face against him.
“She is not your child.”
“She would have been.”
The words shocked everyone.
Ethan stared at the door.
“What does that mean?”
Corinne laughed again.
“Mara never told you.”
“Told me what?”
“She promised.”
Ethan knew it was probably manipulation.
He also knew Corinne wanted him to engage.
So he did.
“Promised what?”
“That if anything happened to her, I would take care of Maisie.”
“You murdered her mother.”
Silence.
Then Corinne’s voice hardened.
“You don’t know what happened.”
“I know enough.”
“No.”
“You know Derek’s version.”
Ethan looked toward the dispatcher icon.
Everything was being recorded.
“Then give me yours.”
“Mara was reckless.”
“You paid Derek.”
“Derek lied.”
“You told him the weather was even better.”
Silence.
Ethan pressed.
“You told him he did his job after Mara died.”
Corinne suddenly hit the door.
Maisie flinched.
“You don’t understand what she did to me!”
There it was.
The mask slipping.
“What did Mara do?”
“She took everything.”
“What?”
“My future.”
Ethan almost laughed.
“We were never together.”
“You noticed me.”
“At a gala?”
“You looked at me.”
Ethan stared at the door in disbelief.
Corinne’s voice grew emotional.
“You helped Natalie.”
“You helped Mara.”
“You helped everyone except me.”
“I didn’t know you.”
“You could have.”
“That isn’t how relationships work.”
“You chose her.”
“I loved her.”
Silence.
Then something struck the door again.
Corinne’s breathing became audible.
“She laughed at me.”
“Mara?”
“She knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That I could make you happier.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
This was madness shaped into entitlement.
“Mara loved me.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“She was leaving.”
“No.”
Corinne’s voice sharpened.
“She was going to Leah.”
“To protect Maisie.”
“She wanted away from you.”
“Mara recorded a video.”
Silence.
Ethan waited.
“She told me she loved me.”
No response.
“She told me exactly what you would say.”
Still nothing.
“That must be hard for you.”
Corinne screamed.
“SHUT UP!”
Maisie began crying.
Ethan immediately stopped engaging.
Footsteps came from outside.
Police.
Corinne heard them too.
The hallway went silent.
Then running.
Ethan waited until the dispatcher confirmed officers had entered before unlocking the door.
Police searched the house.
One guard had been found unconscious near the rear gate.
He was alive.
The second guard had been lured away by a false call about movement near a barn.
Corinne entered using a copied access code.
No one knew how she obtained it.
She escaped through a basement window before officers reached the hallway.
But she left something behind.
Mara’s silver music box.
Inside it, police found a folded note.
Ethan opened it only after Pierce arrived.
The handwriting was Corinne’s.
Mara stole you first.
I only took back what should have been mine.
Below it was another sentence.
Ask Leah about the promise.
Ethan looked toward Leah.
Her face changed.
“What promise?”
Leah shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“Corinne says you do.”
“She lies.”
“Yes.”
“But she uses pieces of truth.”
Leah stared at the note.
Then something changed in her expression.
“Oh.”
Ethan stiffened.
“What?”
Leah sat slowly.
“Before Maisie was born.”
“What?”
“Mara and I talked about guardians.”
Ethan waited.
“She asked who I thought should care for Maisie if something happened to both of you.”
“And?”
“I said me.”
“Obviously.”
“But Mara mentioned Corinne.”
Ethan’s blood ran cold.
“Why?”
“This was when Corinne first came back.”
“Before Mara realized what she was doing.”
“Yes.”
Leah looked ashamed.
“Mara said Corinne had been helpful.”
“She joked that between me and Corinne, Maisie would have too many mothers.”
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
“Corinne turned a joke into a promise.”
“Probably.”
Maisie spoke from the doorway.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
The little girl held her rabbit.
“Mommy did promise.”
Ethan crouched.
“What did she promise?”
Maisie’s eyes filled.
“That Corinne would never get me.”
The room went silent.
“When did she say that?”
“In the star room.”
“What exactly did Mommy say?”
Maisie thought.
“She said, ‘I promise she will never take you from Daddy.’”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Corinne had reversed the meaning.
She had turned Mara’s promise of protection into supposed permission.
Again.
Always the same technique.
Take truth.
Twist it.
Use it against the person who remembered imperfectly.
Detective Pierce examined the music box.
Then he noticed something.
A tiny indentation beneath the lining.
Investigators removed the bottom.
Inside sat a key.
Not a house key.
Not a car key.
A bank-deposit-box key.
A number was engraved on it.
Leah stared.
“Mara’s box.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What?”
“Mara had a deposit box.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“She told me once she kept copies of important documents somewhere outside the house.”
Pierce photographed the key.
Within hours, investigators identified the bank.
The box was registered under Mara Bennett and one secondary authorized user.
Ethan assumed the second name would be his.
It was not.
The second authorized user was Natalie Sloan.
Inside the box waited the final set of evidence Mara had hidden before she died.
And among those documents was a handwritten confession.
Not Corinne’s.
May you like
Evelyn Vale’s.
