Chapter 14 - THE HEARING

Corinne was arrested nine days later.

A convenience-store clerk recognized her despite dyed hair.

Police surrounded a rented cottage before dawn.

Corinne surrendered without resistance.

When officers brought her outside, she smiled at the cameras.

That smile went viral.

News outlets picked up the story.

Wealthy Executive’s Wife Arrested in Connection With Financial Fraud and Cold-Case Investigation.

Ethan hated every headline.

He wanted Mara’s name protected.

He wanted Maisie invisible.

Instead, reporters gathered near the courthouse.

Corinne’s attorneys filed aggressive motions.

They challenged searches.

They questioned Natalie’s credibility.

They portrayed Derek as a desperate criminal seeking a reduced sentence.

They claimed Mara had been paranoid and emotionally unstable.

Ethan expected that.

What he did not expect was Corinne’s request for temporary visitation with Maisie.

The filing enraged him.

“She hurt her.”

His attorney, Rebecca Shaw, nodded.

“We’ll oppose it.”

“She threatened her.”

“Yes.”

“She broke into a protected location.”

“Yes.”

“Why is this even being heard?”

“Because courts hear requests.”

Ethan paced.

“She doesn’t get to use my daughter as theater.”

Rebecca looked directly at him.

“Then don’t give her a performance.”

The hearing occurred behind closed doors because Maisie was a minor.

Corinne entered wearing a simple navy dress.

No makeup.

Hair pulled back.

She looked small.

Controlled.

Victimized.

Ethan understood immediately.

Natalie had warned him.

Corinne would become whatever the room rewarded.

Her attorney argued that Corinne loved Maisie.

That the bruising incident had been misunderstood.

That Corinne had acted as a mother figure for nearly two years.

That abruptly severing contact could harm the child.

Then Rebecca presented Maisie’s recorded forensic interview.

Ethan had not watched the entire thing before.

He did now.

Maisie sat beside a trained interviewer.

“Did Corinne ever tell you secrets?”

“Yes.”

“What secrets?”

“That Daddy would leave.”

“Anything else?”

“That Mommy didn’t love me.”

“Did that make you sad?”

“Yes.”

“Did Corinne ever hurt you?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She squeezed.”

“Anywhere else?”

“My hair.”

“Anything else?”

Maisie paused.

“She put me in Mommy’s room.”

Ethan froze.

The interviewer asked.

“What do you mean?”

“She made me sit there.”

“For how long?”

“Until I said Mommy wanted Corinne to be my new mommy.”

Ethan’s stomach turned.

Corinne remained expressionless across the courtroom.

The interviewer continued.

“What happened if you didn’t say it?”

“She turned the lights off.”

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

“Were you scared?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Daddy?”

Maisie looked down.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Corinne said Daddy would think I was bad.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Rebecca touched his arm.

He forced himself to remain still.

The video ended.

Corinne’s attorney requested a break.

The judge refused.

Detective Pierce testified about Corinne entering the protected residence.

Officer Ruiz testified about the initial incident.

A pediatric specialist testified that Maisie’s bruising was consistent with forceful gripping.

Then Leah testified.

Corinne’s attorney attacked her immediately.

“You disliked my client.”

“Yes.”

“You blamed her for your sister’s death.”

“I suspected her.”

“You attempted to remove Maisie from Mr. Bennett’s care.”

“No.”

“You sent repeated letters.”

“Birthday cards.”

“You continued after being asked to stop.”

“I was asked by Corinne.”

“Mr. Bennett agreed.”

Leah looked at Ethan.

“I believed he was grieving and being manipulated.”

The attorney smiled.

“How convenient.”

Leah’s expression hardened.

“What’s convenient is that your client threw my letters away before Maisie could see them.”

“Can you prove that?”

Maisie’s forensic interview had already described it.

The attorney changed subjects.

Then came the question everyone expected.

“Did your sister ever tell you she was planning to leave Ethan?”

Leah answered.

“Yes.”

Ethan’s heart stopped.

Corinne looked at him.

For the first time all day, she smiled.

The attorney leaned forward.

“So Mara did intend to leave her husband.”

Leah looked at him.

“No.”

“You just said yes.”

“She planned to leave the house for a few days.”

“With Maisie?”

“Yes.”

“Without Ethan?”

“Yes.”

Corinne’s smile widened.

Then Leah finished.

“Because she was afraid Corinne would kill him.”

The room went silent.

Corinne’s smile vanished.

The attorney objected.

Rebecca produced Mara’s notes.

Leah continued.

“Mara wanted Ethan out of danger.”

“She planned to take Maisie to my home and then tell Ethan everything somewhere Corinne couldn’t reach them.”

The judge reviewed the supporting records.

Corinne stared at Ethan.

He did not look back.

The old lie had finally collapsed.

Mara had planned to leave the house.

Not the marriage.

Corinne had taken that fragment and spent two years turning it into emotional poison.

The judge denied visitation.

A temporary no-contact order remained.

Corinne showed no reaction.

Until the hearing ended.

As deputies approached her, she turned toward Ethan.

“Mara was going to leave you eventually.”

Ethan looked at her.

“No.”

“You know she was.”

“No.”

“She pitied you.”

Ethan almost smiled.

Natalie had predicted this exact tactic.

Corinne needed one doubt.

One crack.

Ethan gave her nothing.

“Mara knew exactly what you would say.”

Corinne’s face changed.

“She knew you better than you knew yourself.”

“No.”

“And she still loved me.”

Corinne stepped forward.

A deputy stopped her.

Ethan continued.

“That is the part you could never steal.”

Corinne’s calm shattered.

“You think she was special?”

Her voice rose.

“She was weak!”

The courtroom turned.

“She had everything and complained!”

A deputy pulled Corinne back.

“She didn’t deserve you!”

Ethan remained still.

Corinne shouted.

“She didn’t deserve that house!”

Another step backward.

“She didn’t deserve Maisie!”

There it was.

A public glimpse of the obsession.

Rebecca did not need to say anything.

The court reporter captured every word.

Corinne realized too late.

Her expression changed.

She became quiet again.

But the mask had slipped where witnesses could see it.

Outside the courthouse, Ethan avoided reporters.

He returned to Maisie.

She was waiting with Rachel.

“Did Corinne get to come home?”

“No.”

Maisie’s shoulders relaxed.

“Good.”

Ethan picked her up.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

Then she touched his cheek.

“Are you?”

He thought about lying.

Instead he said.

“I’m getting there.”

That night, Detective Pierce called.

Forensic teams had reexamined retained components from Mara’s vehicle.

Modern testing had identified evidence consistent with deliberate interference before the crash.

It was not yet enough to determine exactly who performed it.

But Derek had already admitted he did.

The remaining question was intent.

Then Pierce told Ethan about a recovered message.

It had been deleted from Corinne’s cloud account but preserved on a synchronized device.

Sent to Evelyn two hours before Mara died.

Tonight she finally stops being Mrs. Bennett.

Ethan stared into the darkness.

Corinne’s attorneys could argue about context.

Derek could minimize his intentions.

Evelyn could remain silent.

But the pattern had become impossible to ignore.

Corinne had been waiting for Mara to lose her name.

And the moment Mara died, Corinne began preparing to take it.
