CHAPTER 2 — The Dance That Changed Everything

For one long moment, Miguel couldn't move.
The ballroom faded around him.
The crystal chandeliers.
The orchestra.
The hundreds of guests.
All he could see was the little girl he had first met sixteen years earlier, hiding behind her mother's legs with scraped knees and frightened eyes.
Now she stood before him in a pale blue gown, her hand still outstretched.
Waiting.
Miguel's eyes filled with tears.
Slowly, almost afraid she might disappear, he reached for her hand.
"I'd be honored," he whispered.
The orchestra conductor glanced uncertainly at Valeria.
She nodded.
The waltz began again.
This time, softer.
Slower.
Miguel rested one trembling hand on her shoulder while she placed hers against his.
Neither of them spoke during the first few steps.
They didn't need to.
The entire ballroom watched as a man who shared no blood with the bride danced as though protecting the greatest treasure of his life.
Halfway through the song, Valeria smiled through her tears.
"Remember when you taught me to dance in the kitchen?"
Miguel laughed quietly.
"You kept stepping on my feet."
"You never complained."
"I was too proud you wanted to dance with me."
The guests smiled.
Even the musicians struggled to hide their emotions.
Across the room, Rafael stood motionless.
No one looked at him anymore.
Not because he had been embarrassed.
May you like
Because, for the first time in his life, he understood something money, charm, and biology could never buy.
He had lost his daughter years before he realized she was gone.
