Chapter 13 - THE DAY CLAIRE CHANGED SIDES

Three days later, Claire withdrew from the lawsuit.

Ryan exploded.

I knew because he came to my house again.

This time he did not get past the porch.

“You turned her against me.”

I remained behind the locked screen door.

“No.”

“She withdrew because of you.”

“She withdrew because of your emails.”

His face changed.

For the first time, I watched a lie disappear before he could say it.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“December seventeenth.”

He froze.

I continued.

“Documentation of family expectation.”

His face went pale.

“You invaded privileged communications.”

“I invaded nothing.”

“Claire had no right.”

“Claire is your wife.”

“She had no right.”

He stepped closer.

“Those emails were taken out of context.”

“What context makes manipulating a widow sound better?”

He slapped his palm against the porch railing.

“You think this is some moral victory?”

“I think you should leave.”

“You ruined us.”

“No.”

“You sold the one thing that could have saved us.”

“I sold something you never owned.”

His voice rose.

“My children could lose their home because of you.”

I opened the screen door.

That surprised him.

I stepped onto the porch.

“Do not put your choices on your children.”

He stared at me.

“You borrowed the money.”

His jaw clenched.

“You hid the debt.”

He looked away.

“You lied to lenders.”

Silence.

“You manipulated Claire.”

His nostrils flared.

“And then you decided a sixty-eight-year-old widow should pay the bill.”

He stepped backward.

“You’ve always thought you were better than me.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I thought you were better than this.”

That hurt him.

I saw it.

For one second, anger left his face.

Then it returned even stronger.

“You’ll regret this.”

A car door slammed behind him.

Daniel.

He had pulled into my driveway without either of us noticing.

My son walked toward the porch.

“Leave.”

Ryan turned.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

Daniel kept walking.

“You sued our mother over our father’s memory.”

Ryan pointed at him.

“Stay out of my marriage.”

Daniel stopped six feet away.

“I’m not talking about your marriage.”

His voice was quiet.

“I’m talking about my mother.”

Ryan looked between us.

Then he laughed bitterly.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The perfect son.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the street.

“Just the son who knows when he’s standing on property that doesn’t belong to him.”

Ryan left.

Claire called an hour later.

He had not gone home.

“He texted me.”

“What did he say?”

“He says I betrayed him.”

I closed my eyes.

May you like

“What do you think?”

“I think I stopped betraying you.”
