Chapter 14 - LORRAINE’S SECRET LOAN

Once Claire withdrew from Ryan’s lawsuit, discovery became more complicated for him.

He could no longer rely on her cooperation.

He also could not prevent her from answering questions truthfully.

That was how we learned about Lorraine’s second loan.

The first eighty thousand dollars had been disclosed.

The second had not.

Lorraine and Walter had taken out a home-equity line on their own house and given Ryan another one hundred and forty thousand dollars.

Ryan promised repayment after “the Ellis lake property restructuring.”

The phrase appeared in writing.

Evelyn showed me the email during a meeting.

I read it twice.

“So Lorraine wasn’t protecting Ryan.”

“She was protecting herself.”

“Partly.”

Evelyn nodded.

“If the lake house transferred, Ryan expected to refinance.”

“And repay his parents.”

“Yes.”

I remembered Lorraine sitting across from me in pearls telling me I had more than enough.

Suddenly her desperation made perfect sense.

My home was supposed to rescue hers.

I left Evelyn’s office and drove directly to Claire.

She had moved into a short-term apartment with the children.

Ryan remained at their house.

When Claire opened the door, she looked exhausted but calmer.

I handed her the email.

She read it.

Then sat down.

“I didn’t know.”

“I believe you.”

She looked at me.

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

“That almost makes it worse.”

“How?”

“Because every time I say I didn’t know, I hear how much I chose not to know.”

I sat beside her.

That was the first time since the voicemail that I touched her.

Her shoulders shook.

I put my arm around her.

For several minutes, she cried against me the way she had when she was a child.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“I really thought you were being difficult.”

“I know.”

“I thought you were holding onto the house because you didn’t trust us.”

“I didn’t.”

She pulled back.

That answer hurt her.

I did not soften it.

“Not anymore.”

Claire wiped her face.

“Can I earn it back?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Slowly.”

That was not the answer she wanted.

It was the only honest one.

The next morning, Lorraine appeared at Claire’s apartment.

Claire called me afterward.

“She blamed me.”

“For what?”

“For giving Evelyn the emails.”

“Of course.”

“She said family business should stay private.”

I sighed.

“Privacy is often the word people use when secrecy benefits them.”

Claire gave a sad laugh.

“She said you’re tearing everyone apart.”

“No.”

“I told her that.”

I was surprised.

“What did you say?”

Claire was quiet.

Then she repeated it.

“I said, ‘Mom didn’t tear this family apart by refusing to be robbed.’”

I closed my eyes.

Months earlier, Claire had told me not to come to my own house.

Now she was defending me.

It did not erase the first act.

But healing rarely arrives as erasure.

It arrives as evidence that the next choice may be different.
