Chapter 3: The Mother Who Built an Empire of Fear

By noon, Carmen was hosting a lavish family brunch.

Champagne flowed freely as relatives congratulated her on gaining "the perfect daughter-in-law."

She smiled proudly.

"Young wives need guidance," she told her guests.

"They learn eventually."

The front doors opened.

Conversation stopped instantly.

Alexander walked in first.

I followed beside him.

Behind us came two detectives, three uniformed officers, and Sofia's attorney carrying a thick evidence file.

Carmen's smile disappeared.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Alexander placed a tablet on the dining table.

Without speaking, he pressed Play.

The hotel surveillance footage filled the screen.

Every guest watched Carmen enter the honeymoon suite.

Watched Javier wait outside.

Watched the women leave almost an hour later.

No one spoke.

Then the attorney opened another folder.

"Medical documentation confirms multiple blunt-force injuries."

Another folder followed.

"The victim's statement has been recorded."

Then another.

"Hotel key-card records."

"CCTV timestamps."

"Phone messages."

Everything matched.

Javier suddenly stood.

"This is all a misunderstanding."

Sofia looked directly at him.

For the first time since the wedding, her voice never trembled.

"You heard me begging."

"You counted every minute."

"And you chose your mother."

Javier lowered his eyes.

He couldn't deny it.

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"Carmen Alvarez."

"You are under arrest on suspicion of aggravated assault, criminal intimidation, conspiracy, and attempted coercion involving property."

One officer placed handcuffs around Carmen's wrists.

She stared at Alexander in disbelief.

"You would destroy an entire family over one argument?"

Alexander finally spoke.

"No."

"You destroyed your own family the moment you laid a hand on my daughter."

The room remained silent as Carmen was escorted through the same front door she had proudly welcomed guests through only hours earlier.

The honeymoon photographs on the wall suddenly looked like evidence instead of memories.
