Chapter 3: The Empire Falls

News of the arrest spread across the city within hours.

The wedding that had filled social media with glamorous photos suddenly became the country's biggest scandal.

Television stations replayed surveillance footage.

Newspapers published photographs of Sofia's bruises.

Public sympathy poured in.

Carmen, however, refused to admit guilt.

"This is all lies," she shouted while being escorted into court.

"My daughter-in-law is trying to steal from our family!"

But prosecutors had far more than Sofia's testimony.

They had medical reports.

Hotel surveillance.

Witnesses.

Phone records.

And...

Javier's recorded confession.

One by one, the women who had entered the hotel suite turned against Carmen.

Faced with prison, they accepted plea agreements and admitted the truth.

Carmen had planned everything weeks before the wedding.

She believed that once Sofia became part of the family, fear would force her to sign over the luxury condominium.

It had worked before.

Several former daughters-in-law from distant relatives came forward with stories of intimidation and financial manipulation.

The courtroom fell silent.

The judge looked directly at Carmen.

"You did not welcome a bride into your family."

"You treated her like property."

Across the room, Javier lowered his head.

He pleaded guilty to aiding the assault by deliberately refusing to intervene.

His marriage ended before it had lasted twenty-four hours.

When the verdict was announced, Carmen was sentenced to years in prison.

The judge also ordered restitution for Sofia's medical treatment and emotional damages.

As deputies led Carmen away in handcuffs, she turned toward Sofia.

"You ruined my family!"

For the first time since her wedding night...

Sofia answered without fear.

"No."

"You ruined your own."

The courtroom erupted into applause before the judge restored order.

Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded around Sofia.

She looked at the cameras and spoke softly.

"I stayed silent because I was afraid."

"If sharing my story helps one person leave an abusive situation..."

"Then every scar has meaning."

Behind her stood Elena.

Beside them stood Alexander.

For the first time in years...

The broken family stood together.
