Chapter 4: The Missing Reports

Chapter 4: The Missing Reports
Colonel James Bennett stared at the hospital tablet for several long seconds.
His name had disappeared.
The emergency authorization for Emily's unborn baby had been altered.
And somehow, Ryan's mother—Linda Cole—had been placed in control.
The room became eerily quiet.
Dana Ruiz broke the silence.
"Doctor... when was this authorization changed?"
Dr. Priya Shah enlarged another section of the audit log.
"Twenty-three days ago."
James frowned.
"Emily never signed anything."
Dr. Shah nodded.
"That's exactly what concerns us."
She scrolled farther.
"The electronic signature appears to match Emily's patient profile."
Emily slowly sat up in her hospital bed.
"I never changed it."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"I've never even seen that form."
Dr. Shah looked at her gently.
"I believe you."
James looked back at the screen.
"So someone forged it."
The doctor hesitated.
"We can't officially say that yet."
"But someone accessed protected medical records..."
"...removed abuse disclosures..."
"...downloaded emergency authorization forms..."
"...and somehow changed legal decision-makers."
James finished the sentence himself.
"That's criminal."
Dr. Shah didn't disagree.
Instead, she picked up another phone.
"I've already notified hospital compliance."
Dana folded her arms.
"This is much bigger than domestic violence now."
James looked toward Emily.
She suddenly appeared even smaller inside the hospital bed.
For months she hadn't only been trapped inside her marriage.
Someone had been quietly removing every escape route she tried to use.
Thirty minutes later...
Two detectives from the Chicago Police Department entered the room.
Detective Maria Alvarez.
Twenty years investigating violent crimes.
Calm eyes.
Sharp voice.
Beside her stood Detective Kevin Ross, carrying a thick evidence folder.
They introduced themselves before sitting across from Emily.
"Mrs. Cole," Alvarez said softly.
"You can stop this interview anytime."
Emily nodded.
"We need to understand exactly what happened."
James quietly stood.
"I'll wait outside."
Emily reached for his hand.
"No."
She squeezed it.
"Please stay."
Detective Alvarez smiled.
"That's perfectly fine."
She opened a notebook.
"When did Ryan first hit you?"
Emily stared at the blanket.
She couldn't answer.
Not because she didn't remember.
Because she remembered everything.
Every slap.
Every shove.
Every apology afterward.
Every promise that it would never happen again.
Finally...
"It wasn't when he hit me."
Everyone looked at her.
"It started before that."
Alvarez leaned forward.
"What do you mean?"
Emily swallowed.
"The first thing he took..."
"...wasn't my safety."
She looked toward the hospital window.
"It was my confidence."
Six months earlier...
Ryan wasn't violent.
Not physically.
He simply corrected everything.
"You're too sensitive."
"You misunderstood."
"You're imagining things."
"You forgot."
"You remembered wrong."
Every disagreement ended the same way.
Emily apologizing.
Even when she wasn't sure what she had done.
Linda helped.
Whenever Ryan criticized Emily...
Linda agreed.
Whenever Emily defended herself...
Linda laughed.
Whenever Emily cried...
They called it hormones.
Then Ryan suggested quitting her part-time graphic design job.
"You're pregnant."
"I'll take care of everything."
Emily agreed.
A month later...
Ryan canceled her debit card.
"Too many expenses."
Linda collected Emily's medications.
"So you don't forget."
Ryan kept her phone at night.
"So you can sleep."
He answered her father's calls.
"So you don't get stressed."
By the time Ryan shoved her for the first time...
Emily had already lost almost every piece of independence she once had.
The detectives listened without interrupting.
Ross quietly took notes.
Alvarez asked,
"When did the physical abuse begin?"
Emily closed her eyes.
"The day we learned we were having a girl."
James looked up.
Ryan wanted a son.
Emily continued.
"He smiled at the ultrasound."
"But when we got home..."
She rubbed her wrist unconsciously.
"He threw the baby clothes across the room."
Her breathing became uneven.
"He said daughters cost money."
James felt his jaw tighten.
Emily continued speaking.
"He grabbed my arm."
"Not hard."
"Just enough."
"He apologized immediately."
"He cried."
"He bought flowers."
"He said he was scared about becoming a father."
Alvarez nodded slowly.
"The abuse escalated."
Emily whispered,
"Every week."
Dr. Shah suddenly interrupted.
"Detective..."
She held another printed document.
"I found something else."
Everyone turned.
The doctor placed several pages on the table.
Emergency room photographs.
Taken automatically during Emily's previous hospital visits.
James stared.
The bruises matched.
Exactly.
The wrist injury.
The shoulder.
The side of her abdomen.
The hospital had photographed every injury.
But none of those photographs appeared in the official reports.
Detective Ross looked confused.
"Where were these?"
"They weren't deleted."
Dr. Shah frowned.
"They were hidden."
James looked at her.
"Hidden?"
"The images remained inside our secure imaging server."
"But whoever modified the reports..."
"...forgot to delete the original photographs."
Detective Alvarez immediately requested copies.
"This changes everything."
Hospital Compliance Director Michael Greene arrived less than twenty minutes later.
He looked exhausted.
"I'm terribly sorry."
James looked directly at him.
"I don't want apologies."
"I want answers."
Greene nodded.
"So do we."
He placed another folder onto the table.
"We completed a preliminary access review."
Every eye focused on him.
"There were seven unauthorized modifications."
Emily gasped.
"Seven?"
Greene nodded.
"Not one."
"Seven."
He spread the pages across the table.
Every hospital visit.
Every complaint.
Every bruise.
Every request to speak privately.
Every mention of abuse...
Had disappeared afterward.
Someone had systematically erased them.
James slowly read every page.
The pattern became horrifyingly clear.
Original note:
Patient appears frightened of husband.
Modified version:
Patient anxious due to pregnancy hormones.
Original:
Bruising inconsistent with accidental fall.
Modified:
Patient reports clumsiness.
Original:
Requested domestic violence advocate.
Modified:
Patient declined additional services.
The room became silent again.
Emily covered her mouth.
"I asked for help."
Dr. Shah gently nodded.
"Yes."
"I knew I did."
She began crying.
Ryan had convinced her that pregnancy had affected her memory.
For weeks...
She genuinely believed she imagined asking nurses for help.
Now...
The hospital records proved she had remembered correctly all along.
James sat beside her.
He didn't speak.
He simply held her hand.
Detective Ross looked toward Greene.
"Who had access?"
Greene took a deep breath.
"Originally..."
"...we believed only Linda Cole."
"But there's a problem."
"What problem?"
"Linda's employment ended four months ago."
Everyone looked confused.
"But the changes continued."
Dr. Shah frowned.
"So who made them?"
Greene turned another page.
"Our cybersecurity team traced every remote login."
James already sensed the answer wouldn't be simple.
"There were two user accounts."
"Linda's..."
"...and another active employee."
Detective Alvarez looked up.
"Who?"
Greene hesitated.
His expression darkened.
"A physician."
The room froze.
James slowly stood.
"A doctor?"
Greene nodded.
"Obstetrics."
Emily's breathing accelerated.
"No..."
Greene swallowed.
"The account belonged to Dr. Nathan Mercer."
Emily immediately recognized the name.
Her face drained of color.
James noticed instantly.
"You know him."
Emily nodded.
"He was my OB-GYN."
The realization spread through the room like poison.
Ryan hadn't simply lied to Emily.
Someone inside the healthcare system may have been helping him.
Detective Alvarez immediately ordered another investigator to locate Dr. Mercer.
Meanwhile...
Hospital security technicians finished extracting data from Emily's recovered phone.
An evidence technician entered carrying the cracked device.
"We got it working."
Emily stared at the phone.
Her hands trembled.
Inside that phone...
Lived months of fear.
Months of whispered recordings.
Months of evidence.
The technician connected the phone to a speaker.
Everyone remained silent.
He opened the earliest audio file.
The room filled with static.
Then...
Ryan's voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
"If you tell your father..."
"...I'll make sure he never meets this baby."
Emily shut her eyes.
The recording continued.
A loud crash.
Emily crying.
Ryan breathing heavily.
Then another voice.
Linda.
"Not the face."
Everyone looked toward the speaker.
Linda's calm voice continued.
"Bruises on the face raise questions."
A horrifying silence filled the room.
Then Ryan answered.
"I know."
Linda again.
"Hit lower."
James slowly closed his eyes.
Even Detective Alvarez looked shaken.
The recording continued.
"If she loses the baby..."
"...everyone will blame pregnancy complications."
Emily began sobbing.
Dana immediately embraced her.
James didn't move.
He couldn't.
Every muscle in his body had become rigid.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally...
Detective Ross quietly said,
"My God."
Just then...
The hospital room door burst open.
A young nurse ran inside.
"Doctor!"
Dr. Shah turned.
"What happened?"
"Security just called."
She struggled to catch her breath.
"The man you're looking for..."
"Dr. Mercer..."
"...he never came to work this morning."
Greene frowned.
"He called in sick?"
The nurse shook her head.
"No."
"He resigned."
"When?"
She looked down at the printed message.
"Forty-two minutes ago."
Detective Alvarez immediately reached for her phone.
"Find him."
The nurse continued.
"There's something else."
Everyone looked up.
"He didn't just resign."
She swallowed.
"He emptied his office."
James felt another piece of the puzzle slide into place.
Someone had warned Dr. Mercer.
Someone knew the investigation had begun.
And whoever it was...
May you like
Was still free.
