Chapter 7: The Neighbor's Recording

Chapter 7: The Neighbor's Recording

Three days passed.

Emily remained under observation in the maternal trauma unit.

Her blood pressure had begun to stabilize.

The baby's heartbeat remained strong.

For the first time in months, she slept through the night without waking in fear.

But outside the hospital...

The investigation accelerated.

Detective Maria Alvarez stood before a wall covered with photographs.

Ryan.

Linda.

Dr. Nathan Mercer.

Hospital access logs.

Copies of altered medical records.

Printed screenshots from Emily's recovered phone.

Red strings connected names, dates and locations.

Something still didn't fit.

Ryan's abuse had been carefully hidden.

Too carefully.

Someone had anticipated every attempt Emily might make to ask for help.

Alvarez pointed to the timeline.

"Every hospital visit."

Ross nodded.

"Every record changed within hours."

"Every phone call intercepted."

"Every letter hidden."

She stepped back.

"This wasn't random."

Ross looked at the evidence.

"It was organized."

Before Alvarez could answer, another detective entered carrying a small flash drive.

"We found a witness."

The witness lived directly across the hallway from Ryan and Emily's apartment.

Mrs. Eleanor Brooks.

Seventy-two years old.

Retired elementary school teacher.

She had lived in the building for eighteen years.

"I almost didn't come," she admitted quietly.

Detective Alvarez offered her coffee.

"What changed your mind?"

Mrs. Brooks stared into the cup.

"When I saw Emily on the news."

She swallowed.

"I realized I wasn't imagining things."

"What things?"

"The screaming."

Mrs. Brooks had heard arguments for months.

Not every day.

But often enough to notice a pattern.

Ryan always shouted first.

Emily almost never raised her voice.

Sometimes...

Everything became frighteningly quiet afterward.

One night...

Mrs. Brooks heard something she would never forget.

A loud crash.

Then Emily crying.

Then Ryan saying...

"Look what you made me do."

The old woman wiped away a tear.

"I wanted to call the police."

"What stopped you?"

She looked ashamed.

"Ryan knocked on my door ten minutes later."

"He said Emily had fainted."

"He smiled."

"He thanked me for being such a caring neighbor."

"I believed him."

Detective Ross remained silent.

Mrs. Brooks continued.

"Until the next week."

"What happened?"

"I heard Linda."

Alvarez looked up.

"What did she say?"

Mrs. Brooks closed her eyes, repeating the exact words she had heard through the apartment wall.

"If she calls her father again, take the phone."

The room fell silent.

"There is something else," Mrs. Brooks said.

"I brought it."

She handed Detective Alvarez the flash drive.

"My grandson installed a security camera outside my apartment."

Ross looked surprised.

"In the hallway?"

She nodded.

"It records my front door."

"Mostly to protect me from package thieves."

Alvarez immediately inserted the flash drive into her laptop.

Video appeared.

A hallway.

Timestamp.

Three months earlier.

Ryan leaving the apartment.

Linda entering twenty minutes later.

Nothing unusual.

Then another recording.

One month later.

Emily slowly opened the apartment door.

She looked weak.

She glanced both directions before stepping into the hallway.

She had a cell phone in her hand.

She barely walked five feet.

The elevator arrived.

Before she could enter...

Ryan suddenly rushed out of the stairwell.

He grabbed her wrist.

The camera had no audio.

But the images were clear.

Emily recoiled.

Ryan took the phone.

He pointed toward the apartment.

Emily shook her head.

Ryan stepped closer.

Mrs. Brooks covered her mouth.

The video showed Ryan grabbing Emily by both arms and forcing her back inside.

The apartment door slammed shut.

Detective Ross quietly paused the video.

"That's unlawful restraint."

Alvarez nodded.

"And probably kidnapping."

Mrs. Brooks whispered,

"I watched it happen."

"Why didn't you help?"

The elderly woman began crying.

"I was afraid."

Emily watched the video later that afternoon.

She hadn't realized someone had seen it.

She stared at the screen.

"I remember."

James sat beside her.

"You were trying to call me."

Emily nodded.

"My old phone."

"What happened afterward?"

She looked down.

"He broke it."

Detective Alvarez exchanged a glance with Ross.

"The same phone we recovered under the mattress."

Emily nodded again.

"I thought all the evidence was gone."

Ross smiled slightly.

"It wasn't."

Meanwhile...

Digital forensic specialists completed recovery of Ryan's deleted messages.

Thousands of texts appeared.

Most were ordinary.

Work.

Bills.

Friends.

Then...

An encrypted messaging application.

The messages had been deleted twice.

The technicians restored them anyway.

Ross opened the first conversation.

Ryan:

She keeps asking for her father.

Unknown Contact:

Keep her isolated. It gets harder once family becomes involved.

Ryan:

She tried calling today.

Unknown Contact:

Destroy the phone.

Ross frowned.

The account had no name.

Only initials.

N.M.

Detective Alvarez looked toward the evidence board.

"Nathan Mercer."

Ross nodded.

"It fits."

Another message appeared.

Ryan:

She wants another appointment.

N.M.:

Schedule only when Linda is available.

Another.

Ryan:

She told the nurse she feels unsafe.

N.M.:

Already handled.

Ross slowly lowered the tablet.

"The doctor wasn't covering for Ryan..."

"...he was advising him."

That evening...

James met with Sergeant Major Walker inside the hospital cafeteria.

Walker placed a thin folder on the table.

"I made a few calls."

James opened it.

Private investigator reports.

Financial records.

Corporate registrations.

One page immediately caught his attention.

Ryan had recently received three wire transfers.

Each payment...

Exactly $15,000.

James looked up.

"From who?"

Walker turned another page.

The transfers originated from a consulting company.

Lakeview Medical Consulting LLC.

James frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

Walker nodded.

"Neither had I."

"So I looked deeper."

He pointed to the ownership records.

The company listed only one corporate officer.

Dr. Nathan Mercer.

James leaned back.

"So Mercer was paying Ryan."

Walker shook his head.

"Not exactly."

"What do you mean?"

"The money reached Ryan."

"But it didn't begin with Mercer."

James turned another page.

The consulting company itself had received much larger payments.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

From one organization.

Mercy Regional Health Network.

The same hospital network.

James looked toward Walker.

"This keeps getting bigger."

Walker nodded slowly.

"Much bigger."

Late that night...

Emily couldn't sleep.

She quietly walked into the maternity hallway.

A nurse smiled.

"Couldn't rest?"

Emily nodded.

She wandered toward the nursery observation window.

Tiny newborns slept peacefully inside clear bassinets.

Emily rested her hand against the glass.

"I hope she's safe."

A soft voice answered behind her.

"She already is."

James stood there holding two cups of tea.

He handed one to Emily.

They stood together in silence.

After several minutes...

Emily quietly asked,

"Do you think Mom would be proud of me?"

James looked toward the babies.

"She would be proud that you survived."

Emily shook her head.

"I didn't survive because I was brave."

"No?"

"I survived because I was afraid."

James smiled gently.

"Courage isn't the absence of fear."

Emily looked at him.

"It's choosing the right thing despite it."

She thought about that.

Then slowly nodded.

For the first time...

She believed she might someday stop feeling ashamed.

At the same moment...

Detective Alvarez received an urgent call from hospital security.

"We found Dr. Mercer's office computer."

"Anything useful?"

"A lot."

"What?"

The technician sounded stunned.

"There are hidden patient files."

"Only Emily's?"

"No."

"How many?"

Silence.

Then...

"Thirty-seven."

Alvarez froze.

"Thirty-seven women."

The technician continued quietly.

"They all reported injuries during pregnancy."

"And every one of their records was later changed."

Alvarez slowly lowered the phone.

This case was no longer about one family.

It had uncovered something far darker.

A system that may have concealed abuse against dozens of vulnerable women.

She looked toward the evidence board.

Emily had believed she was alone.

She never had been.

And somewhere...

May you like

Whoever had built that system now knew investigators were getting dangerously close.
