Three months later, Emily gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
She named him Benjamin, after her late grandfather.
The courtroom overflowed on the first day of Ryan's trial.
News outlets across Illinois followed every hearing.
The recordings were played.
The photographs were shown.
Doctors testified that several blows had come dangerously close to causing catastrophic harm to both Emily and her unborn child.
Ryan finally took the stand.
"I lost my temper."
"I never meant to seriously hurt her."
Emily calmly walked to the witness stand.
She looked at the man she had once loved.
"You didn't lose your temper."
"You repeated a choice."
"You chose fear because you believed fear would keep me silent."
The courtroom remained motionless.
Colonel Bennett stood behind his daughter, not as a military officer, but simply as a father.
After less than three hours of deliberation, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts.
Ryan was sentenced to a lengthy prison term.
Linda was convicted for helping conceal the abuse, intimidating the victim, and attempting to interfere with the investigation.
