Chapter 10 - The Fire

The commercial building changed everything.

The fire had been ruled suspicious but not yet criminal.

Ryan’s company had submitted an insurance claim for $4.8 million.

The insurer had not paid.

That explained the debt.

Ryan had borrowed heavily expecting a payout.

When the insurer delayed the claim, lenders started demanding money.

The entire scheme began collapsing.

Detective Keller asked whether I knew anything about the property.

“Nothing.”

“Have you ever visited it?”

“No.”

“Did Ryan mention a warehouse?”

“No.”

She showed me a photograph.

Old brick.

Boarded windows.

A rusted loading dock.

I had never seen it.

Then she showed me ownership documents.

My forged signature appeared again.

According to the paperwork, I was a guarantor.

My skin crawled.

“If the lender believes this is real, can they come after me?”

Samantha answered.

“They can try.”

That afternoon became a flood of lawyers, forensic accountants, bank fraud teams, and corporate investigators.

Every hour exposed another lie.

Ryan had used my professional reputation to secure loans.

He told lenders I was a silent investor.

He presented financial statements containing my assets.

He provided copies of my executive compensation.

He even included photographs of us at charity events to strengthen the appearance that we were business partners.

My marriage had become part of his loan application.

At five that evening, Ryan’s criminal attorney called Samantha.

He wanted to negotiate.

I refused.

At six, Diane called from a hotel.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“Claire, please.”

I said nothing.

“Grant is still being held.”

“Good.”

“That’s cruel.”

“He burned my stomach while I was pregnant.”

“He was drunk.”

“Ryan was sober.”

Silence.

I continued.

“You watched.”

“I froze.”

“You lifted your wineglass.”

Her breathing changed.

“You don’t understand what Grant is like when someone challenges him.”

“That sounds like something you should have told me before encouraging me to pay his bills.”

“We’re family.”

“No.”

I looked around my silent penthouse.

“We were a system.”

“What?”

“Grant demanded.”

“You excused him.”

“Brooke benefited.”

“Ryan lied.”

“And I financed all of you.”

Diane started crying.

Then she said something I didn’t expect.

“You think Ryan started this?”

I went completely still.

“What does that mean?”

She immediately tried to backtrack.

“Nothing.”

“Diane.”

“I shouldn’t have called.”

“Who started it?”

“I have to go.”

“Diane.”

She disconnected.

I called Samantha.

Then Detective Keller.

Neither could force Diane to speak.

But less than an hour later, someone did.

Brooke walked voluntarily into the police station.

She had her phone in one hand.

And according to Detective Keller, she was finally ready to tell them why the warehouse burned.
