Chapter 2 – The Lies Begin to Collapse

Richard spent the night in county jail.
Brandon spent it calling every relative he could think of.
By morning, half the family believed I had framed my own father.
My aunt Linda posted online.
"Some daughters destroy families for money."
No one mentioned cancer.
No one mentioned the choking.
No one mentioned the recording.
Until Jonathan released another surprise.
With my permission, he filed the audio, hospital photographs, and medical reports into the court record.
Within twenty-four hours, local news stations requested copies.
Then an investigative reporter discovered something unexpected.
The gambling debt wasn't twenty thousand dollars.
It was almost three hundred thousand.
Brandon hadn't simply lost money.
He had stolen from friends.
Borrowed from loan sharks.
Forged signatures.
Used my name on two fraudulent loan applications while I was undergoing chemotherapy.
The FBI became interested.
Brandon stopped answering his phone.
My mother still defended him.
"He's under stress."
Jonathan looked at her across the conference table.
"So was your daughter while receiving poison through an IV."
Diane looked away.
