Chapter 16 - The Last Thirty Seconds

Vale was stronger than he looked.
He drove his elbow into my ribs.
Pain exploded through my side.
The pistol slid across the floor.
Rachel kicked it beneath a cabinet.
Vale grabbed my throat.
“You should have stayed ignorant.”
I struck him.
He struck me back.
Then Ethan pulled him away.
The two men crashed into the dining table.
The handwritten ledger fell open across the floor.
Outside, the sound of approaching sirens grew louder.
Vale looked toward the windows.
“You brought police.”
“No.”
Ethan smiled through blood on his lip.
“I brought everybody.”
FBI.
State police.
Federal marshals.
The leak inside the investigation no longer mattered because Ethan had transmitted the estate’s location directly to multiple agencies at the same time.
No single corrupt official could stop all of them.
Vale ran.
He reached the hallway.
Then Lily stood up from behind the couch.
“Daddy, he’s going to the secret door.”
I looked.
A panel beside the staircase stood slightly open.
Vale had an escape route.
Ethan ran after him.
I started to follow.
Rachel grabbed me.
“The kids.”
She was right.
For once, I stopped chasing answers.
I went back to my children.
Tommy screamed as I lifted him.
Lily wrapped both arms around my neck.
“I kept him safe.”
I kissed her forehead.
“You did.”
“But you never have to do that again.”
Rachel stood several feet away.
She did not reach for Lily.
I noticed.
So did Lily.
“Mommy?”
Rachel began crying.
“I’m sorry, baby.”
“For leaving?”
“Yes.”
“For making you keep secrets?”
Rachel covered her mouth.
“Yes.”
Lily looked at me.
Five-year-old eyes asking a question no child should have to ask.
Was Mommy safe?
I could not answer for her.
Not yet.
Agents flooded the house.
Brooks reached us.
“Where’s Vale?”
“Escape passage.”
Teams moved immediately.
Three minutes later, a radio call came through.
Vale had reached the boathouse.
He attempted to cross the lake in a motorboat.
State police intercepted him before he reached the opposite shore.
Adrian Vale was arrested at 1:27 a.m.
Alive.
The man who had controlled Rachel’s life for eleven years was finally in handcuffs.
But when the danger ended, another truth remained.
Catching Vale did not repair our family.
Rachel and I sat in separate ambulances.
Lily refused to leave my side.
Tommy slept against my chest.
Rachel watched us from across the driveway.
Our eyes met.
There was love there.
I knew there was.
There was also damage.
May you like
And love, I was beginning to understand, did not automatically repair damage.
Sometimes love simply gave you the courage to face it.
