Chapter 7 - The Elephant

Tommy’s blue stuffed elephant was still at home.

Detective Ramirez sent officers to retrieve it.

They found a small flash drive sewn inside the lining.

The data was encrypted.

Federal agents arrived before noon.

That was when the situation stopped being a family crisis and became something much larger.

Special Agent Nathan Brooks introduced himself with the calm voice of someone accustomed to frightened families.

“We’ve been looking for Adrian Vale for eleven years.”

“And my wife knew where he was?”

“She knew pieces.”

“Did you know she was alive?”

“We suspected.”

That answer made me furious.

“You suspected?”

“Daniel.”

“My children nearly died while people were playing games with secrets.”

Brooks didn’t argue.

“You have every right to be angry.”

“Then give me something useful.”

He did.

Vale had rebuilt his organization through shell companies.

Construction.

Medical billing.

Freight.

Private security.

The money moved through dozens of accounts.

Rebecca Hart had copied the original ledger before disappearing.

Without it, prosecutors had only fragments.

With it, they could connect Vale to the old operation and possibly several newer crimes.

“So he wants the drive.”

“Yes.”

“And he has Rachel.”

“Probably.”

I looked through the glass at Lily asleep beside Tommy.

“Then trade it.”

Brooks shook his head.

“Vale won’t honor a trade.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know exactly that.”

He slid an old photograph across the table.

Three people stood beside a warehouse.

Vale.

A younger Rachel.

And a teenage boy.

“That’s Rachel’s brother, Ethan Hart.”

“He disappeared?”

“Yes.”

Brooks placed another photograph beside it.

It had been taken six months ago.

A man exiting a building in Baltimore.

Older.

Bearded.

But clearly the same person.

“He’s alive.”

I stared at him.

“Rachel doesn’t know?”

“We don’t believe so.”

“Why didn’t you tell her?”

“We couldn’t find her.”

I laughed once.

It sounded bitter even to me.

“She was raising two kids in Connecticut.”

“Under a fabricated identity built to survive federal background checks.”

That silenced me.

Then Lily appeared in the doorway.

A nurse stood behind her.

“I’m sorry.”

“She woke up asking for you.”

I lifted her.

She saw the photograph on the table.

Her body went rigid.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

She pointed toward Ethan.

“He came too.”

Agent Brooks leaned forward.

“You’ve seen that man?”

Lily nodded.

“At our house?”

“Yes.”

“With Mr. Vale?”

“No.”

She looked confused.

“He was outside.”

“What did he do?”

“He told Mommy through the window to run.”

Everything stopped.

Rachel’s missing brother had found her.

And he had been trying to warn her.

Brooks immediately began making calls.

I held Lily closer.

She whispered against my shoulder.

“Daddy, Mommy didn’t leave because she doesn’t love us.”

“I know.”

“She was crying when she went.”

That did not erase what happened.

But it changed the question.

May you like

Rachel was no longer simply the person I needed answers from.

She was someone we needed to find before Adrian Vale decided she had become unnecessary.
