Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO SIGNED HIS NAME

The pen touched the paper before I could stop him.
Luka Moretti wrote his name in one smooth motion beneath the word FATHER.
For three full seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
My daughter slept against my chest, completely unaware that a tattooed stranger had just inserted himself into the most terrifying day of my life.
“What are you doing?”
My voice came out weak.
Luka handed the folder back to the nurse.
“Making sure nobody removes this child from the hospital without your permission.”
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“Mr. Moretti, this isn’t exactly—”
“Then call hospital legal.”
His voice never rose.
That somehow made him more intimidating.
The nurse hesitated before walking quickly toward the station.
I stared at Luka.
“You can’t just sign something like that.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you?”
His dark eyes moved toward the elevator where my husband, Ryan, had disappeared with his mistress less than five minutes earlier.
“Because your husband is about to make a phone call.”
A chill moved through me.
“To who?”
Luka did not answer.
Instead, he reached into his coat and placed a small card on the rolling table beside my hospital bed.
It had only a phone number printed on it.
No company.
No title.
No address.
Then he looked at my daughter.
“What did you name her?”
“Grace.”
Something changed in Luka’s expression.
Not surprise exactly.
Pain.
He repeated the name quietly.
“Grace.”
I tightened my arms around her.
“You know something about her.”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Not here.”
Anger finally broke through my fear.
“You walk into my hospital room, insult my husband, sign my daughter’s birth certificate, and now you expect me to trust you?”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“I expect you to survive long enough to decide whether you trust me.”
Before I could respond, the door opened.
A hospital administrator entered with two security officers.
Behind them stood Ryan.
He had come back.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him was Vanessa.
The woman he had been sleeping with while I was pregnant.
Ryan adjusted the sleeves of his expensive gray coat and looked directly at Luka.
Then at the folder.
Then at me.
“What did you do?”
I had never heard fear in my husband’s voice before.
Luka turned slowly.
Ryan’s face drained of color.
“You.”
One word.
But it told me everything.
They knew each other.
Luka smiled without warmth.
“Hello, Ryan.”
Vanessa looked between them.
“You know this man?”
Ryan ignored her.
His eyes stayed fixed on Luka.
“What are you doing here?”
Luka reached inside his coat.
Ryan actually stepped backward.
But Luka only removed a folded document.
He handed it to me.
At the top was my full name.
ELENA CARTER.
Below it was a hospital case number.
M-17.
I looked up.
“What is this?”
Ryan lunged forward.
“Don’t read that.”
Luka blocked him with one arm.
And for the first time since my husband abandoned me, I saw panic tear through his carefully controlled face.
Not anger.
Not embarrassment.
Panic.
Luka looked at me.
“Ask your husband why your prenatal bloodwork was deleted three weeks ago.”
I turned toward Ryan.
His jaw tightened.
“Elena, he’s dangerous.”
Luka’s expression remained calm.
“Ask him.”
I stared at the man I had loved for six years.
“Ryan?”
He said nothing.
And that silence frightened me more than any answer could have.
Then the hospital administrator cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Carter, we have a problem.”
He held up a tablet.
“Someone attempted to access your newborn daughter’s medical file seven minutes ago.”
My stomach dropped.
“Who?”
The administrator looked at Ryan.
Then at Luka.
Then back at me.
“The request came from an executive account belonging to Carter Biomedical.”
My father’s company.
May you like
Except my father had been dead for twelve years.
And nobody was supposed to have access to that account anymore.
